Radiation Safety Program

The University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee is licensed by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to use by-product radionuclides (license # 48-09944-01) and by the State of Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services (license # 079-1324-01) to use accelerator produced radionuclides, naturally occurring radionuclides, and machine produced radiation. The NRC and DHFS require that the use of radiation and radionuclides be strictly controlled to ensure that both the people using the materials and members of the general population receive as little radiation exposure as possible.

At UWM the Department of University Safety and Assurances, Radiation Safety Program, is responsible for ensuring that all uses of ionizing radiation are in compliance with existing NRC and DHFS requirements. The Radiation Safety Program manages the safe use of radioactive material on campus via training, laboratory audits, laboratory surveys, radionuclide control and inventory, personal dosimetry and waste disposal.

If you would like additional information on the campus radiation safety program or other radiation-related topics, please contact the Radiation Safety Officer at 229-4275 or email Sharron Daly.
