Tire Disposal

Used vehicle tires are a growing problem for society. Tires are the posterwaste for the shrinking available landfill problem. Not only do tires take up a lot a space in a landfill, tires are a fire hazard, and tires present a unique irritation to landfill operators by "floating" to the surface of the landfill. Many landfills have banned tires or have specific restrictions before accepting tires for landfilling.

Some enterprises have sprung up to use tires as a resource. By-product utilization engineering has brought us many uses for old tires, from playground surfacing to roadbed filler. Unfortunately, the supply of old tires exceeds the demand for tire-derived products.

At UWM, the fleet garage at the University Services Building handles the disposal of old tires. Generally, UWM has to pay for the removal of old tires. For additional information, please contact the Facilities Services Fleet Garage.
