Silver is reclaimed from spent photographic fixer generated by UWM's Photographic Services, Fine Arts Photography, Union Craft Center and various other departmental darkroom operations. The silver is plated out electrolytically resulting in an effluent containing about 10 ppm silver.

This effluent is percolated through a steel cartridge filter to further polish out the silver. The final discharge to the sewer contains less than 1 ppm silver.
