Disposal of Miscellaneous Surplus Items
When materials and equipment is no longer needed and the original purchase price of the item is $5,000 or more, the items must be put through the UWM Surplus Property Program before disposal. Purchasing will attempt to find a buyer for the surplus material, reducing our waste materials and helping other organizations and individuals recycle. A department listing a surplus item must make sure that no harmful contaminants or hazardous components remain with, on or within the item.
Surplus equipment, instruments and other items must be free of:
- Hazardous chemicals
- Asbestos
- PCB-filled components
- Batteries (either charged or dead)
- Biohazardous, infectious or pathogenic agents
- Compressed gases, including refrigerants
- Radioactive materials and contamination
- Other known or recognized hazards
Also potential sharp objects, such as glass or sharp edges should be removed or guarded. Other insidious hazards which are not defeatable or removable should be indicated on a clear sign, prominently posted on each item.
