Battery Disposal


At UWM, dead and unneeded batteries must be given to Environmental Affairs for disposal or recycling, including:

Battery Assortment
  1. Mercury (Watch Batteries)
  2. Lithium (Computer Clock Batteries)
  3. Silver Oxide (Camera Batteries)
  4. Nickel Cadmium (NiCad or NiCd rechargeable batteries)
  5. Lead Acid (e.g. Gel Cell Batteries, Car Batteries)
  6. Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH)

Carbon Zinc batteries or Alkaline batteries less than 4 years old can be thrown away in the normal trash. These batteries often have a green band or other green motif.


Procedures for Disposal:

For Leaky Batteries:

  1. Throw away alkaline and carbon zinc batteries in normal trash.
  2. Put leaky battery in a sturdy plastic bag and seal.
  3. Wash hands thoroughly.

All other batteries must be picked up by Environmental Affairs Program staff. If you are not currently on a regular waste pick up schedule, please contact Environmental Affairs staff at x4999 or x2883 to arrange for a waste pick-up.
