Acid Neutralization and Disposal

Liquids must have a pH of 5 or higher, and must not contain other hazardous ingredients, before drain disposal is appropriate. More acidic solutions (5.0 or less) must first be neutralized before sewering.

Waste Minimization:   Neutralizing agents are available at no cost. Contact the staff in UWM's Environmental Affairs Program at x4999 or 2883 for information regarding our Surplus Chemical Redistribution Program.

Acid

Phosphoric Acid

What about drains that are labeled acid waste?

Despite the indication the name implies, acid drain lines are not to be used for disposal of acids! Acid waste drain line and acid neutralization basin are terms used in the National Building Codes and in the building and construction trades. These terms became part of the construction trade jargon many years ago and persist, along with the lead pipe and the wooden door, none of which really mean the same thing anymore. Acid waste lines are still specified in new buildings, just in case someone mistakenly pours out or spills acid into the drains. Code writers have not taken this requirement out of the codes.

If someone needs assistance in neutralizing their acids, or if the waste acid solution contains other hazardous constituents, such as heavy metals, please contact Environmental Affairs staff at x4999 or x2883 to request a waste pick up.
