Fire Safety Awareness Test Answers
Which number do you call from your workstation for fire, medical or other emergencies?
In the event of a medical emergency, fire or life-threatening situation, dial 9-911 from any campus phone. From a cell phone dial 229-9911. Your call will be connected to the UWM Police Department Dispatcher. If you are calling from the Water Institute, dial only 911.
What should you do if you are stranded in an elevator?
If you are trapped in an elevator, use the emergency phone to notify University Police. If the phone is inoperable, turn on the emergency alarm, which will signal for help.
Never attempt to exit a stalled elevator unless directed to do so by University Police or the Milwaukee Fire Department.
Where is the nearest fire extinguisher? When was it last inspected?
You should know the location of the nearest fire extinguisher within the building where you work. Each extinguisher is labeled with a tag indicating the date it was last inspected. Campus fire extinguishers are checked monthly.
How will you be alerted to leave the building?
All university buildings are equipped with fire alarms that sound an audible tone. Some buildings have strobe flashers for the hearing impaired. Building fire alarms are tested on a regular schedule. At present, only a few campus buildings have the alarm system connected to the campus police. Only the Library, Vogel, Chemistry, Kenilworth, and Sandburg alarms are monitored at the police station. Therefore, you must dial 9-911 from an intercampus phone, 911 from a coin phone, 229-9911 from a cell phone, or use an emergency phone to report the incident to the University Police.
In an emergency, which exit would be your second choice?
90% of individuals entering a building will leave through the same exit. In the event of an emergency and your primary exit is obstructed or not available, you need to know in advance where a second exit is located. Whenever you enter a new building, observe your surroundings and determine the location of an auxiliary exit.
How will you be able to find the exit in the event of a power failure?
If evacuation of the building is necessary, do not re-enter the building until instructed to do so by the University Police. If evacuation of the building is not necessary, restrict movement to areas that are adequately illuminated.
Battery-powered flashlights should be kept at known locations, readily accessible during outages. Candles and other open flame devices are prohibited.
When you have to evacuate the building, where will you go?
Once outside, move to a clear area away from the affected building. Keep streets and walkways clear for emergency vehicles and crews. Do not return to an evacuated building unless authorized to do so by the Milwaukee Fire Department or University Police.
What do you need to do during a tornado warning?
Move to a location inside the building away from windows or glass. Most injuries related to tornadoes are caused by flying broken glass or other debris. An interior stairwell, hallway, or room on the lowest floor or in the basement is best, as long as it is away from windows. Contrary to popular belief, the southwest corner of a building is no safer than any other corner of the building. You may want to consider moving to another building if necessary. The Union, Business, EMS parking structures would provide excellent shelter, but not the open design of the Sandburg parking structure. Avoid auditoriums, gymnasiums, or other spaces with wide, freespan roofs.
What are the two answers that the 911 operator will need the most?
Provide detailed information on the type of emergency -- fire, chemical spill, injury, etc. If the injury is serious and the individual will need transportation to a medical facility, relay that information to the emergency operator when you place the call. Do not attempt to transport a seriously injured individual in your personal vehicle.
Additionally you will need to provide the exact location of the emergency situation.
