Tornado Drills

Floor Captain

Tornado Drill Resources:

Instructions for Tornado Drills:

Approximately 10 minutes before the drill, floor captains should assemble at the locations indicated below for any last minutes instructions, questions, etc. If you participated in either the fire or tornado drills last year and were issued a green vest, please wear the vest you were issued for the drill. If you are in one of the buildings without a public address system and were issued a whistle, please bring that as well. If you were never issued a vest or whistle, or are unable to locate the one you were issued, please contact University Safety & Assurances at ext. 6339 and we will try to provide you with one prior to the drill.

In preparation for the drill, floor captains should become familiar with the specific shelter locations in their building. You will be directing staff, students and visitors to these locations.

Your role during the drill will be to make a sweep of the floor to which you are assigned to ensure that everyone is leaving the area and proceeding to the shelter. Not everyone will be familiar with the location(s), so you may need to direct people to the shelter area. Ask people to move quickly and calmly to the shelter area using the nearest stairwell. (In the event of an actual tornado, power to the building may be lost and therefore people should be discouraged from attempting to use the elevator to reach the shelter location.) In addition to directing people to the shelter area, you will be asked to assess the success of the drill and evaluate the designated shelter area (Was it large enough to accommodate everyone? Is the area clearly marked? Were individuals able to evacuate in a timely manner to the designated area...) Please print out a copy of the evaluation form to use during the drill exercise. You may either turn the form in to one of the University Safety and Assurances representatives at the conclusion of your drill, or mail it to "University Safety & Assurances, Engelmann Hall, Room 270."

Supervisors should be responsible for assisting any student, staff member or visitor who has a disability. Recommendations for assisting include:

  • Mobility impaired-wheelchair: Elevator to shelter
  • Mobility impaired, non-wheelchair: Elevator to shelter
  • Hearing impaired: Inform of announcement and shelter advice
  • Visually impaired: Offer elbow & assist to shelter

Drills in High Rise Buildings:

In the event of an actual tornado, SECONDS COUNT. In a high rise building it may not be possible to evacuate quickly to the basement area, therefore in the high-rise building listed below the following procedure should be followed:

  • Floors 4 and below should go to the designated basement shelter area
  • Floors 5 and above should seek shelter in interior spaces (restrooms, stairways, interior rooms and hallways)

Those buildings considered “high rise” for purposes of the drill are: Bolton Hall, Chemistry Building, Cunningham, Curtin Hall, Enderis Hall, EMS, Sandburg and UCCE.

How the Drill Will be Conducted:

In those buildings equipped with Public Address systems, the building chair or building chair alternate will make an announcement to the building occupants to take shelter in the designated shelter area. Buildings with no PA systems will be notified by manual alarms (whistles) on each floor of the building. These buildings are: Alumni House, Architecture and Urban Planning, Bolton Hall, Chapman Hall, Hefter Conference Center, Mellencamp Hall, Physics Building, Power Plant, University Services Building and Zelazo Center.

At the Conclusion of the Drill:

Once everyone has assembled in the shelter area, the building chair will issue an "All Clear". In those building with a public address system, the "All Clear" announcement will be made over the PA.

Floor captains should re-assemble at the meeting location for a debriefing and to turn in their evaluation form.
