Basic Biological Safety – Principles and Practices

Biosafety Levels and Infectious Agents

A biosafety level is assigned to work based on two items:

  1. The nature of the infectious agent
  2. The procedures that will be conducted
Vaccination

When considering the nature of the infectious agent, the following items must be considered:

  • How is it transmitted?
  • How does it exist in the environment?
  • What is the infectious dose?
  • What is the host range?
