Basic Biological Safety – Principles and Practices
Biosafety Levels and Infectious Agents
A biosafety level is assigned to work based on two items:
- The nature of the infectious agent
- The procedures that will be conducted
When considering the nature of the infectious agent, the following items must be considered:
- How is it transmitted?
- How does it exist in the environment?
- What is the infectious dose?
- What is the host range?
- Are vaccinations or therapies available?
