Spill Response and Clean-up
Small Biohazardous Spill Inside a Biological Safety Cabinet
- Immediately stop all work – leave BSC blower fan on during cleanup.
- Pour an appropriate disinfectant solution around spill.
- Put on disposable gloves and cover spill with disinfectant soaked paper towels.
- With paper towels and appropriate disinfectant detergent wipe down cabinet walls, work surfaces and equipment.
- Report spill to supervisor if you have not already done so.
- Flood work surface and drain pan (Type II BSC) with disinfectant and allow to stand at least 20 minutes.
- Wipe up all excess disinfectant.
- Transfer all contaminated materials into an autoclave bag; autoclave and dispose of spill clean up materials as appropriate.
- Wipe up all excess disinfectant.
- Wash hands with soap or other ant-imicrobial agent.
