Small Biohazardous Spill Inside a Biological Safety Cabinet

  1. Immediately stop all work – leave BSC blower fan on during cleanup.
  2. Pour an appropriate disinfectant solution around spill.
  3. Put on disposable gloves and cover spill with disinfectant soaked paper towels.
  4. With paper towels and appropriate disinfectant detergent wipe down cabinet walls, work surfaces and equipment.
  5. Report spill to supervisor if you have not already done so.
  6. Flood work surface and drain pan (Type II BSC) with disinfectant and allow to stand at least 20 minutes.
  7. Wipe up all excess disinfectant.
  8. Transfer all contaminated materials into an autoclave bag; autoclave and dispose of spill clean up materials as appropriate.
  9. Wipe up all excess disinfectant.
  10. Wash hands with soap or other ant-imicrobial agent.
