Washing Hands

Exposure Incident

You must remember that any situation that results in an exposure requires that immediate actions be taken to best ensure that you receive proper treatment in the event that an infection occurs.

If blood, body fluids or other viable biological materials:

  • Are accidentally ingested,
  • Splashed into your eyes, nose or mouth,
  • Enter your body through breaks in the skin, or
  • Enter your body by way of a biologically-contaminated sharp device (including a bite),

You must take the following three actions:

  1. Get to running water and flush the wound or exposure site for 10 to 15 minutes.
  2. Seek medical attention if needed.
  3. Notify your supervisor immediately so that the incident can be documented for medical follow-up if necessary.
