Basic Biological Safety – Principles and Practices

Biohazardous Waste Management

Biohazardous waste management can be confusing because there is not one "standard" rule that applies. Many regulatory agencies have differing definitions of what biohazards are and how they should be treated. But bottom line, all of these regulations are intended to protect those who have to handle waste and the general public.

In this module, we will give you the "basics" that will allow you to:

  1. Know what materials are regulated as biohazardous waste.
  2. Know how to properly segregate and store these wastes.
  3. Know how to treat and dispose of biohazardous wastes.
  4. Review site-specific procedures with your supervisor before generating, treating or disposing of biohazardous waste.

What is Biohazardous Waste?

It is waste that is potentially infectious to humans, animals, or plants. It is also known by other names such as "medical waste" or "infectious waste."
