MS-222: Fish and Amphibian Anesthesia


Standard Safe Operating Procedure

  1. Read and understand the hazards indicated on the material safety data sheet associated with MS-222 prior to starting operations.
  2. Wear protective clothing (lab coat, apron), nitrile gloves (double glove), and safety goggles when handling the MS-222 powder and solutions.
  3. ALL work with MS-222 powder must be performed inside a fume hood.
    1. Prepare concentrated stock solution by mixing an appropriate amount of MS-222 powder in a small volume of water.

    2. Dilute the stock solution further as required.
    3. Use a utensil to stir until all powder is dissolved.
  4. Wear safety goggles and nitrile gloves (double glove) to handle animals exposed to MS-222.
  5. Dispose of MS-222 wastes by flushing down the drain to a sanitary sewer with an excess of water.
    1. If work is to be performed in a remote location where a sewer may not be readily available, plan ahead by bringing a container to collect all waste.

    2. Dispose of waste upon return to laboratory.

Note: Do not discard MS-222 directly into surface water, storm water conveyances or catch basins.
