Research Brief

The Department of Communication is also noted for the major role it has played in the generation and dissemination of basic and applied research. Its faculty is among the most published in the discipline of Communication.

Research Awards and Recognition
The Department's faculty dedication to research has been received local and national recognition. Among our most recent recognitions are:

  • Top Rated Graduate Program
    As a consequence of its history of research productivity and because of its strong commitment to instructional excellence, the Department's graduate program was rated among the top five M.A. communication programs in the entire United States and the top program in the Central States region in the most recent national survey of Communication graduate programs.

  • University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Graduate School/Foundation Research Award
    Two of the Department's faculty, Mike Allen and Barry Brummet, have received this award. This award is given annually to no more than five of the +900 faculty members of the university and is based on a university peer review.

  • University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Graduate School Research Incentive Awards
    Department faculty have received this award five times in the past ten years. The award is designed to reward and promote the writing of research grant proposals.

  • University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Marquette University Center for International Studies Grants
    One of the Department's faculty have received this award. The award is designed to aid international and intercultural research.

  • Extramural Grants and Contracts
    The faculty's commitment to research is also evidenced by the extramural funding of its research. Recent funding sources have included the American Telephone and Telegraph Corporation, National Institute of Mental Health, National Endowment for the Humanities, NAFSA Association of International Education Cooperative Grants Program, Arizona Historical Foundation, and the Mortgage Guaranty Insurance Corporation.
