MA student -- and Manager of Public Health Planning for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee -- Bonnie Halverson delivered a presentation on "Building a New School of Public Health: A Working Model," to the University of Southhampton in the United Kingdom on March 19, 2007.
The Fulbright Senior Specialists' program competitively selected Professor Sandra Braman to receive a grant to work with UNESCO to evaluate laws and regulations related to freedom of expression of the Government of Thailand and to make recommendations regarding the Thai legal environment for free speech to that country's new government.
The UWM Department of Communication had a strong presence at the University of Wisconsin System Women's Studies Consortium meeting in Green Bay, April 4-5, 2008 with a panel that included the following.
MA student Rachael Hill presented the paper, "Reading Race and Racism in
Children's Picture Books" and organized a panel on "Rhetorical Lessons of Advocacy and Activism."
MA student Malynnda Johnson presented the paper, "Social Order and Activism:
How Rhetorical Positioning Can Help or Hurt a Cause."
Professor Kathryn M. Olson presented the paper, Rhetorical Leadership and
Transferable Lessons for Successful Advocacy in Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth."
Assistant Professor Susan Szmania was awarded a 2008-2009 fellowship from the American Scandinavian Foundation to study communication and conflict resolution among Iraqi immigrants living in Sweden. This project will be conducted in collaboration with Malardalen University (Stockholm, Sweden) and the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR).
In April, 2008, Professor Sandra Braman delivered guest lectures at Södertörn University (Stockholm, Sweden), the University of Oslo (Norway), and the University of Copenhagen (Denmark).
The UWM Department of Communication was heavily represented at the Central States Communication Association (CSCA), April 9-13, Madison, WI.
MA student Rebecca Gill presented the paper, "Social Interaction in Online Classes and Students' Sense of Community."
MA student Mindy Johnson chaired panels on "Rhetoric, Design, and PR: The Effects of John Grisham's The Innocent Man on Ada, Oklahoma Citizens" and on "Applications of New Technology in the Classroom."
Ad hoc instructor Shannon Lee Denney presented a paper on "Attorney Communication Ethics: A Call for Casuistry" and participated in the panel, "Ripped from the Headlines: Freedom of Speech in the News."
Professor Mike Allen served as a respondent for a panel on "The Fat, Ugly, and Lazy Must Pack Their Bags: A Case Study of the Delta Zeta Reorganization Efforts"; participated in a panel on "Working Together: Research Teams and Collaborations"; and presented the paper, "The Challenge of Feeling Successful in the Academy."
Professor Mike Allen, Assistant Professor Lindsay Timmerman, Tara Emmers-Sommer (MA, 1992; University of Arizona), and MA students Kate LaPlant and Katie Ksobiech presented the co-authored paper, "A Meta-Analysis Examining the Effectiveness of Abstinence Only Educational Programs."
MA student Emily C. Lenard presented her debut paper, "A Dramatistic Look at
George W. Bush's October 7, 2002, Speech: Manipulation of the American People."
Professor Kathryn M. Olson facilitated a panel on "Effective Rhetorical Leadership in
Activism: Offering and Problematizing Four Rhetorical Tools for Activists," that included Associate Professor John W. Jordan as a participant.
MA student Katie LaPlant, Professor Mike Allen, Assistant Professor Jennifer Peterson and Assistant Professor Susan Szmania co-authored a Top Three Paper in Communication Theory, "The Long Term Effectiveness of HIV Education for Gay Men."
Associate Professor John W. Jordan presented the paper, "Transcending Hollywood:
The Referendum on United 93 as Cinematic Memorial."
An Undergraduate Honors Conference was held in association with the Central States Communication Association meeting that included two students from UWM:
Senior Kim Smith presented the paper, "Facts with Faces: Truth Exposed."
Scott Larsh (BA, 2007) presented the paper, "A Review of Darfur."
As an invited expert, Professor Sandra Braman spoke on "An Analytical Rubric for Global Media Policy" and "Law and Policy as Elements of Media Literacy" at the workshop, Global Media Policy: Concepts, Frameworks, Methods, Venice, Italy, April 17-19.
Assistant Professor Leslie Harris presented the paper, "Rhetorics of Motherhood in the Liberty Bell /Anti-Slavery Books" to the Interdisciplinary Nineteenth Century Studies Conference at Marquette University, Milwaukee, March, 2007.
Professor Sandra Braman delivered the third in the series of Fritt Ord (Freedom of Expression) public lectures at the University of Bergen, Norway, April 15, 2007, on the impact of postmodern legal conditions on the practice of democracy.
The first issue of Communication Monographs (volume 75, issue 1) under the editorship of Professor Mike Allen appeared in April, 2008, with research reports on maternity leave discourse, intractable multiparty conflict, the symbolism of terrorism, and defensive communication in social interactions.
Professor Bill Keith delivered a guest lecture at the University of Minnesota-Duluth on April 25, 2008.
