The program of study is designed to provide practical and theoretical knowledge for students who wish to pursue or advance careers that involve managing or resolving disputes in organizational, educational, community, or family contexts. The program is designed to meet the increasing need of business, organized labor, public sector and community organizations for people with skills in conflict resolution. Graduate Certificate in Rhetorical LeadershipUWM's Rhetorical Leadership program is a humanities-based approach to responsible leadership in all areas of life. Using symbols effectively to create, interpret, and critique shared perspectives is essential to leadership. The study of rhetoric--the ways in which symbols (e.g., speeches, visuals, letters, memos, social protest, opinion pieces, web postings) influence people and so exercise power--is key to leading effectively in contemporary circumstances. Rhetorical education cultivates one's ability to critically assess, shape, and meet leadership situations' unique symbolic demands, whether as an activist, parent, politician, religious leader, or business, education, health care, or non-profit professional. Through a carefully coordinated set of six classes, UWM offers post-baccalaureate students theoretically sound, well-rounded training and practice in rhetorical leadership.
