Formerly known as the Center for Advanced Macroeconomic Policy (CAMP), the
center was founded by a grant from Harvey Wilmeth in 1990. CAMP was designed to
be a research and policy center for transforming the debate about how best to
achieve a sustainable and equitable economic system.
After the international
financial crisis of 1997, the centers emphasis has shifted toward
internationalization. The new name, the Center for Research on International
Economics (CRIE), reflects this change. CRIE is a resource center for the
university and members of the public who wish to broaden their understanding of
economic issues and problems in the U.S. as well as other countries.
CRIE
endeavors to inform people about economic issues that are important to the
local, national and international community. Through working papers and the
sponsorship of speakers and conferences, CRIE engages in extending our
knowledge and understanding of economic problems worldwide. With a strong
international academic focus here at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee,
including the recently added B.A. program in Global Studies, CRIE also provides
applied research opportunities for students interested in global economic
issues.
