Resources FOR TEACHERS
The Center for Teaching International Relations (CTIR) at the University of Denver's Graduate School of International Studies announces a new curriculum program to teach about the global landmines issue. CTIR and the US Deparment of State have teamed up to create standards based performance assessments anchored in civics and geography to teach about this compelling international issue. Each book contains everything you need to engage your students in formulating solutions to this problem:
OFFERED FREE OF CHARGE COURTESY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF STATE CTIR has assessments approprate for the high school, middle school, and elementary grades High School: After completing several activities to increase their awareness of the scope of the problem, students take on the role of advisors to the UN and give recommendations as to which mine-infested countries are most in need of international aid. Middle School: Students write a "My Turn" essay for submission to Newsweek magazine. The activities in the unit prepare students to develop and express an informed opinion about the global landmine crisis and to describe possible steps that could be taken to solve the problem. Elementary School: Using good persuasive writing and speaking skills, students give a presentation before a mock Congressional committee recommending particular policies for the US government to address the landmine crisis. To order your FREE copy of this unit send your name, name of school, grades and subjects taught along with your address, telephone, fax, and email address to CTIR
