Adopt-A-MinefieldTM The newly formed Milwaukee Campaign to Ban Landmines is heading up a community-wide effort to clear a minefield in Cambodia through UNA-USA's Adopt-a-MinefieldTM program. Adopt-A-MinefieldTM is designed to move beyond the political and policy debates typically associated with banning the use of landmines and to provide a practical solution to the tens of millions of mines that contaminate the world. The program has been in operation for only eleven months but has already received over $1 million from individuals and community groups across the nation. Milwaukee's adopted minefield is located in Boeung Krosal in Battambang Province, Cambodia which borders Thailand and is considered to be one of the most heavily mined regions on earth. The minefield is 30,000 square meters with a schoolyard, a pagoda, and surrounding agricultural land. Raising the $30,000 needed to clear the adopted minefield in Cambodia is a way in which Milwaukee can make a positive contribution to the worldwide effort of reducing mine injuries and saving lives. All money collected is forwarded to the United Nations Development Programme for landmine clearance. The Milwaukee Campaign to Ban Landmines invites interested organizations and individuals to join its coalition. For more information, please call 414-332-5629 or e-mail lbohn@csd.uwm.edu.
