Introduction
This resource guide was developed and edited for the 1998 Global Studies
Summer Institute (GSSI) entitled "Cultural Differences in an
Interdependent World: Exploring Global Conflict." This guide features
a variety of Internet resources related to conflict, peace, current news
sources, human rights and humanitarian aid, educational resources, as well
as information related to specific conflicts around the world including: Northern Ireland,
the Middle East, the Great Lakes region in Africa, and the former
Yugoslavia.
The editors of this resource guide are not responsible for the accuracy
and reliability of the resources cited within the guide. Users are
cautioned that some of the resources do not necessarily present
information in a balanced and impartial manner. It is entirely up to the
user to determine the validity of the sources included in this guide.

This excellent resource is part of the War, Peace, and Security Guide
developed by the Information Resource Centre at the Canadian Forces
College--a great place to begin for information about conflicts
worldwide. This site provides a clickable world map of contemporary
conflict.
INitiative on
COnflict Resolution and Ethnicity (INCORE)
A joint initiative of the University of Ulster and the United Nations
University, the INCORE Internet Service is a central resource for those in
the area of conflict resolution and ethnic conflict. This site features
extensive links and resources related to conflict worldwide. Use the

Service to learn more about specific countries and regions
in conflict.

Server
This web server, also maintained by the Information Resource Centre at the
Canadian Forces College in Toronto, Canada, provides additional
information about conflict, war and security issues worldwide. A good
place to start.

This site offers an extensive collection of links related to conflict
resolution and international security issues. Another good place to
start.
UN Peacekeeping Operations
The UN Peacekeeping Operations page provides information about past and
present peacekeeping operations worldwide. Features a clickable world map
of current missions, a section on demining efforts, an historical look
at 50 years of peacekeeping, a photo gallery, and much more.
The United Nations
Resource Guide
Developed by the University of Wisconsin Joint Center for International
Studies, the United Nations Resource Guide is a great resource for
information related to the UN. The UN Resource Guide is organized into
four different sections including: General UN Resources, Teaching About
the UN, UN Agencies, and A Subject Guide to the United Nations. Hard
copies of the guide are also available.
Children and
War
"In the past decade some 2 million children have been killed, 4 to 5
million disabled, 1 million orphaned and 12 million left homeless."
UNICEF's new agenda highlights the plight of children whose families,
communities and ways of life are destroyed by war. This site features
information about the effects of war on children worldwide. The Children
and War site also offers information and resources for teaching about
conflict in the classroom in a section entitled Looking at
War and Conflict in the Classroom.
The Institute for Global Communications
The Institute for Global Communications is a clearinghouse of information
on conflict, peace, environmental issues and human rights. IGC hosts a
number of different resource web sites including CONFLICTNET and PEACENET. IGC is a good
resource for current information about conflict and peace worldwide.
IANWeb--International
Affairs Network
The International Affairs Network and the University of Pittsburgh have
created this site, which is part of the WWW Virtual Library. IANWeb
offers links and resources related to conflict and other relevant issues
(i.e. world regions, countries, human rights, peacekeeping, development,
etc.). Another good starting point for general research.
Global Forum on
Post-Conflict Rebuilding: War-Torn Societies Project
The War-Torn Societies Project is a joint activity between the United
Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) and the Program
for Strategic and International Security Studies in Geneva, Switzerland.

This extensive list of links and resources related to nationalism is part
of the Sociological Research Online web site. The links are divided into
five different categories or forms of nationalism: globalism,

This site features information about ethnic, native or nationalist issues
around the world. The Ethnic World Survey is divided by region into

The Indigenous Studies WWW Virtual Library provides an extensive amount of
information about ethnic populations worldwide.
HateWatch
The goal of HateWatch is to combat and contain online bigotry. This site
features information about hatred in the United States, as well as a
section of WWW links to examples of hatred in various countries around the
world.
Southern Poverty Law Center
The Southern Poverty Law Center sponsors a number of initiatives intended
to combat hatred, intolerance and discrimination in the United States
including Teaching Tolerance and the publication of the
Intelligence Report. A great resource for teachers and students.
Homelands
Homelands offers a listing of and links to many of the autonomy,
secession, independence, and nationalist movements worldwide.
Ethnologue: Languages of the
World
A comprehensive catalog of more than 6,700 languages spoken in 228
countries. The Ethnologue Name Index lists over 39,000 language
names, dialect names, and alternate names. The Ethnologue Family
Index organizes languages according to language families.

Looking at
War and Conflict in the Classroom
The International
Broadcasting Trust developed Looking at War
and Conflict in the Classroom, which features strategies for teaching
about war and conflict across the curriculum, themes for study, a selected
guide of teaching materials, and an example of a classroom activity
entitled On the Line. Looking at War and Conflict in the
Classroom is part of a project entitled The War
Machine.
E-Conflict World Encyclopedia
and Simulation
E-Conflict offers 1,400 pages of content intended to Eradicate
Conflict by increasing cultural awareness. This site features anthems,
flags, maps, weather, and the nations of the world. Visit nations of the
world, take the E-Conflict World Quiz, or participate in one of the
E-Conflict discussion groups.
Play for Peace
Play for Peace is an organization based in Illinois that works to develop
relationships between children in areas affected by conflict. Play
for Peace represents an opportunity for "children of conflicting
cultures to come to know each other through play, creating laughter and
compassion, for today and tomorrow.
Heinemann's
Hot Topics: Conflict in the Balkans Classroom Activities and Resources
Based in Australia, Heinemann's Hot Topics provides educational resources
for teachers related to current events and issues. This site features
links to general resources and some suggested classroom activities related
to the conflict in the former Yugoslavia. Follow the link at the bottom
of the page to learn more about the other "hot topics."

Social Studies Web Sites for K-12 Teachers
This site represents a colossal collection of WWW links to resources for
almost any topic imaginable. There are a variety links, lesson plans, and
curriculum units that focus on conflict. Definitely worth a stop.

Developed by Teachers
Helping Teachers, this site offers several
curriculum resources that deal with aspects of conflict and
discrimination. Check out the Internet lesson plan entitled, "Internet
Connections for Zlata's Diary." Zlata's Diary: A Child's
Life in Sarajevo is a powerful book written by Zlata Filipovic, a 13
year old girl who kept a diary about her experiences during the conflict
in the former Yugoslavia.
Teaching
the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict
This curriculum unit was designed for high school students by Ronald
Stockton, Professor of Political Science, University of Michigan-Dearborn.
It includes an overview of the conflict, student lessons, and background
for teachers.

Conflict Archive on the
INternet (CAIN)
CAIN is one of the most comprehensive collections of resources related to
the "Troubles" in Northern Ireland. CAIN features background information
concerning the conflict, key issues, events, bibliographic resources,
and a gateway to additional resources. CAIN represents an excellent
starting point for teachers and students interested in learning more about
the conflict in Northern Ireland.

The Centre for the Study of Conflict (CSC) falls under the umbrella of the

conflict in Ireland, to encourage the growth of an academic community
involved in conflict research, and to support this process through
seminars, publications, visiting scholars and liaison with other
institutions." CSC offers a variety of publications that focus on
important dimensions of the conflict in Northern Ireland.

Hub
The Irish Internet Hub provides an extensive collection of links to
information related to all things Irish. For example, the IIH
provides links to maps, political parties, political organizations,
governmental information, photos and information concerning the
Loyalist and
Republican murals in Northern Ireland, current events and
much more. The IIH is a good place to start.

Irish History on the Web is a great resource for all aspects of Irish
history. This site includes general Irish history sites, republican
history, unionist history, timelines, documents, and links to other Irish

The Path to Peace is a special report developed by the Irish Times
Newspaper online. This site features a wealth of information about
conflict and peace in Northern Ireland. This site is a good source for
well-balanced information.
The Referendum
on Northern Ireland
As the official site of the Referendum on Northern Ireland, this site
provides general information about the referendum including the text of
the agreement, a section highlighting the pros and cons, and
insight into the peace process.
Close Up Foundation Special
Topic Page: Northern Ireland
The page traces the political history of Northern Ireland, detailing the
events that led up to the "Good Friday Agreement" of April 1998. It also
describes the political impact of this past summer”s Ballymoney and Omagh
bombings. As with Close Up's other Special Topic Pages, the Northern
Ireland page was designed with high school students and teachers in mind.
It features a background article, a timeline of "The Troubles," a
teaching activity, and annotated hyperlinks to additional sources of
information and analysis.

Behind the Mask: The IRA and Sinn Fein
This site highlights the PBS Frontline program entitled Behind the
Mask: The IRA and Sinn Fein, which aired October 21, 1997. The
program and web site feature an interview with Dr. Paul Arther, professor
of politics at the University of Ulster and Senior Fellow at the United
States Institute of Peace, as well as poems, songs, documents and general
information about the IRA and Sinn Fein.

The Irish Times web site offers up-to-date information about the situation

Live News Ireland is an excellent source for current information
and news directly from Ireland. You can search for specific information,

PBS Frontline has developed this gripping web site as a follow-up to the

The Triumph of Evil web site features interviews with UN and US
officials and writer Philip Gourevitch author of "We Regret to Inform You
that Tomorrow We Will Be Killed With Our Families: Stories From Rwanda."
This site also offers a timeline of US/UN actions, readings on genocide,

Yugoslav Peace Watch provides links and resources related to the conflict
in the former Yugoslavia. This site is a good place to go for background

of Sorrow: Agony in the Former Yugoslavia
Faces of Sorrow is a collection of chilling photographs that
illustrate various aspects of the conflict in the former Yugoslavia. "The
more than 50 photographs taken by 36 photojournalists from 14 countries in
this exhibit depict unspeakable acts of destruction waged by the warring
parties from the beginning of the war in Croatia in 1991 through the
recent peace accord in Bosnia and Herzegovina." The photographs are
supplemented by articles and stories written by journalists from The
Washington Post, FRANCE 3, and The Irish Times, as well as
individuals from Human Rights Watch.

The Bosnian Virtual Fieldtrip allows visitors to browse background
information about Bosnia and the conflict, visit and learn about key
players and places and learn more about the Dayton Peace Accords and life

Through the Eyes of Its Children
This site features a wonderful collection of photographs of people and
places throughout Bosnia, as well as a collection of drawings done by
children from Tuzla depicting their perceptions of the conflict in their
country. Highly recommended.

Paths to Peace (New York Times)
Bosnia: Uncertain Paths to Peace is a very powerful collection of
photographs and dialogue related to the conflict that ravaged the former
Yugoslavia. The site offers an interactive photo essay, forums for
discussion, and general information and resources.
BosNet
Bosnet is a voluntary organization, focusing on connecting people and
friends of Bosnia and Herzegovina across the world. A good place to go
for general information about Bosnia, as well as information specific to
the conflict.

Kosova Crisis Center
This site was developed by students from the University of Prishtina in
Kosova. The Kosova Crisis Center web site is dedicated to "Exposing the
Serbian terror in the world." This site offers a history of the rising
tensions in the region, a platform for student action, and links to
information about the conflict in Kosova.

Post: Kosovo Special Report
The Washington Post: Kosovo Special Report offers up-to-date information
about the situation in Kosovo. Includes an overview, links, latest
information, and a discussion forum.

Kosovo Special Report
The BBC: Kosovo Special Report provides general information, news
coverage, interviews with key players, and a search engine for specific
queries concerning the conflict in Kosovo.

Information Center: Daily Reports
This site is maintained by the Hellenic Resource Network. It offers daily
news reports on the situation in Kosovo. The Kosovo Information Center
produces six editions per day, providing the most up-to-date information

The Economist: The
Balkans Survey
The Balkans Survey, which appeared in the Economist in January 1998, helps
to place the conflict in Kosovo in the context of the larger Balkan
conflict. This article provides a contemporary and historical look at
"Europe's roughest neighborhood."
Serbia
Serbian Unity Congress
The Serbian Unity Congress provides general information about Serbia, as
well as extensive information about the conflict from a Serbian
perspective. Click on "politics" to view "Setting the Record
Straight: War in Former Yugoslavia," a collection of pictures,
news stories and resources. Caution: this site contains pictures that may
not be suitable for some viewers.
Yugoslavia.com
Based at the University of Maryland, Yugoslavia.com focuses on the Federal
Republic of Yugoslavia, which includes the republics of Montenegro and
Serbia. This site does not mention the conflict.

Press
The ex-YU Press offers a sampling of current articles translated from the
former and current Yugoslavian press. Ex-YU Press is an interesting
source for current information concerning the conflict in the Balkans.

This site is a good resource for information about

A good source for general information about Croatian history
and culture. Some limited information about the conflict including a
site entitled, War
Against Croatia 1991-1995, a collection of resources related to
the conflict in Ex-Yugoslavia from a Croatian point of view.
News from Croatia
News from Croatia was developed under the supervision of the
Ministry of Science and Technology of the Republic of Croatia. This site
details the latest events in Croatia that took place after Croatian forces
reintegrated Western Slavonia into the legal system of the Republic of
Croatia. News from Croatia features photographs, video clips, a
chronology of events and personal stories.
Hina News Line
Hina News Line is a Croatian News Agency's online news service and
bulletins. This site is in English and Croatian.

The Croatian Institute for Culture and Information provides general

Croatian Web Central
Focuses mainly on general information about Croatia including news,

The United States Institute of Peace (USIP) is an outstanding source of
information concerning conflict and peace worldwide. They publish
numerous reports concerning the situation in many countries and regions in
conflict, as well as reports on issues related to conflict and peace.
Many of the resources that they have developed are available on-line, or
you can contact them for free copies.
The Carter
Center
The Carter Center in Atlanta, Georgia is a nonprofit, nonpartisan public
policy institute founded by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter in 1982.
The Center is dedicated to fighting, among other things, conflict and
discrimination through collaborative initiatives in the areas of
democratization and development, global health, and urban revitalization.

Peace Brigades
International
Peace Brigades International is a unique grassroots organization exploring
and implementing nonviolent approaches to peacekeeping and support for
basic human rights. By invitation, PBI sends teams of volunteers to areas
of political repression and conflict. PBI provides protective
international accompaniment for individuals and organizations that have
been threatened by political violence or that are otherwise at risk.

Commissioner for Human Rights
According to Mrs. Mary Robinson, United Nations High Commissioner for
Human Rights, "...today's human rights violations are the causes of
tomorrow's conflicts." The UNHCHR web site provides current
information concerning human rights issues including: the International
Criminal Court, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Human Rights
Education, etc. Use the search engine to find information about specific
topics and issues.
Amnesty International
Amnesty International consistently provides valuable information about
human rights around the world. Visit the AI Library for information about
human rights in specific countries or regions, learn more about current
Amnesty International campaigns, or read a copy of the most recent AI
Annual Report.
The UN Conference on the Establishment of
an International Criminal Court
This is the official site of the UN conference held in Rome where a
statute for the International Criminal Court was adopted on July 17, 1998.
According to Kofi Annan, "There can be no global justice unless the worst
of crimes--crimes against humanity--are subject to the law. In this age
more than ever we recognize that the crime of genocide against one people
truly is an assault on us all--a crime against humanity. The
establishment of an International Criminal Court will ensure that
humanity's response will be swift and will be just."

The three primary functions of the OCHA are to serve in the coordination
