Introduction

This resource guide was developed and edited for the 1998 Global Studies Summer Institute (GSSI) entitled "Cultural Differences in an Interdependent World: Exploring Global Conflict." This guide features a variety of Internet resources related to conflict, peace, current news sources, human rights and humanitarian aid, educational resources, as well as information related to specific conflicts around the world including: Northern Ireland, the Middle East, the Great Lakes region in Africa, and the former Yugoslavia.

The editors of this resource guide are not responsible for the accuracy and reliability of the resources cited within the guide. Users are cautioned that some of the resources do not necessarily present information in a balanced and impartial manner. It is entirely up to the user to determine the validity of the sources included in this guide.

Contemporary Conflicts

    This excellent resource is part of the War, Peace, and Security Guide developed by the Information Resource Centre at the Canadian Forces College--a great place to begin for information about conflicts worldwide. This site provides a clickable world map of contemporary conflict.
INitiative on COnflict Resolution and Ethnicity (INCORE)
    A joint initiative of the University of Ulster and the United Nations University, the INCORE Internet Service is a central resource for those in the area of conflict resolution and ethnic conflict. This site features extensive links and resources related to conflict worldwide. Use the Conflict Data Service to learn more about specific countries and regions in conflict.
War, Peace and Security WWW Server
    This web server, also maintained by the Information Resource Centre at the Canadian Forces College in Toronto, Canada, provides additional information about conflict, war and security issues worldwide. A good place to start.
Conflict Resolution and International Security
    This site offers an extensive collection of links related to conflict resolution and international security issues. Another good place to start.
UN Peacekeeping Operations
    The UN Peacekeeping Operations page provides information about past and present peacekeeping operations worldwide. Features a clickable world map of current missions, a section on demining efforts, an historical look at 50 years of peacekeeping, a photo gallery, and much more.
The United Nations Resource Guide
    Developed by the University of Wisconsin Joint Center for International Studies, the United Nations Resource Guide is a great resource for information related to the UN. The UN Resource Guide is organized into four different sections including: General UN Resources, Teaching About the UN, UN Agencies, and A Subject Guide to the United Nations. Hard copies of the guide are also available.
Children and War
    "In the past decade some 2 million children have been killed, 4 to 5 million disabled, 1 million orphaned and 12 million left homeless." UNICEF's new agenda highlights the plight of children whose families, communities and ways of life are destroyed by war. This site features information about the effects of war on children worldwide. The Children and War site also offers information and resources for teaching about conflict in the classroom in a section entitled Looking at War and Conflict in the Classroom.
The Institute for Global Communications
    The Institute for Global Communications is a clearinghouse of information on conflict, peace, environmental issues and human rights. IGC hosts a number of different resource web sites including CONFLICTNET and PEACENET. IGC is a good resource for current information about conflict and peace worldwide.
IANWeb--International Affairs Network
    The International Affairs Network and the University of Pittsburgh have created this site, which is part of the WWW Virtual Library. IANWeb offers links and resources related to conflict and other relevant issues (i.e. world regions, countries, human rights, peacekeeping, development, etc.). Another good starting point for general research.
Global Forum on Post-Conflict Rebuilding: War-Torn Societies Project
    The War-Torn Societies Project is a joint activity between the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) and the Program for Strategic and International Security Studies in Geneva, Switzerland.

Nationalism Links

    This extensive list of links and resources related to nationalism is part of the Sociological Research Online web site. The links are divided into five different categories or forms of nationalism: globalism, macro-cultural, nation-state nationalism, ethno-nationalism and localism. This is a good starting point.
Ethnic World Survey
    This site features information about ethnic, native or nationalist issues around the world. The Ethnic World Survey is divided by region into five categories: Americas, Africa, Asia/CIS, Europe, and Oceania.
WWW Virtual Library: Migration and Ethnic Relations
    This site, like other WWW Virtual Library sites, offers an amazing amount of information and links to various resources related to migration and ethnic relations. A great place to start.
WWW Virtual Library: Indigenous Studies
    The Indigenous Studies WWW Virtual Library provides an extensive amount of information about ethnic populations worldwide.
HateWatch
    The goal of HateWatch is to combat and contain online bigotry. This site features information about hatred in the United States, as well as a section of WWW links to examples of hatred in various countries around the world.
Southern Poverty Law Center
    The Southern Poverty Law Center sponsors a number of initiatives intended to combat hatred, intolerance and discrimination in the United States including Teaching Tolerance and the publication of the Intelligence Report. A great resource for teachers and students.
Homelands
    Homelands offers a listing of and links to many of the autonomy, secession, independence, and nationalist movements worldwide.
Ethnologue: Languages of the World
    A comprehensive catalog of more than 6,700 languages spoken in 228 countries. The Ethnologue Name Index lists over 39,000 language names, dialect names, and alternate names. The Ethnologue Family Index organizes languages according to language families.

Looking at War and Conflict in the Classroom

    The International Broadcasting Trust developed Looking at War and Conflict in the Classroom, which features strategies for teaching about war and conflict across the curriculum, themes for study, a selected guide of teaching materials, and an example of a classroom activity entitled On the Line. Looking at War and Conflict in the Classroom is part of a project entitled The War Machine.
E-Conflict World Encyclopedia and Simulation
    E-Conflict offers 1,400 pages of content intended to Eradicate Conflict by increasing cultural awareness. This site features anthems, flags, maps, weather, and the nations of the world. Visit nations of the world, take the E-Conflict World Quiz, or participate in one of the E-Conflict discussion groups.
Play for Peace
    Play for Peace is an organization based in Illinois that works to develop relationships between children in areas affected by conflict. Play for Peace represents an opportunity for "children of conflicting cultures to come to know each other through play, creating laughter and compassion, for today and tomorrow.
Heinemann's Hot Topics: Conflict in the Balkans Classroom Activities and Resources
    Based in Australia, Heinemann's Hot Topics provides educational resources for teachers related to current events and issues. This site features links to general resources and some suggested classroom activities related to the conflict in the former Yugoslavia. Follow the link at the bottom of the page to learn more about the other "hot topics."
History and Social Studies Web Sites for K-12 Teachers
    This site represents a colossal collection of WWW links to resources for almost any topic imaginable. There are a variety links, lesson plans, and curriculum units that focus on conflict. Definitely worth a stop.
Social Studies Curriculum Resources
    Developed by Teachers Helping Teachers, this site offers several curriculum resources that deal with aspects of conflict and discrimination. Check out the Internet lesson plan entitled, "Internet Connections for Zlata's Diary." Zlata's Diary: A Child's Life in Sarajevo is a powerful book written by Zlata Filipovic, a 13 year old girl who kept a diary about her experiences during the conflict in the former Yugoslavia.
Teaching the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict
    This curriculum unit was designed for high school students by Ronald Stockton, Professor of Political Science, University of Michigan-Dearborn. It includes an overview of the conflict, student lessons, and background for teachers.
Northern Ireland

Conflict Archive on the INternet (CAIN)

    CAIN is one of the most comprehensive collections of resources related to the "Troubles" in Northern Ireland. CAIN features background information concerning the conflict, key issues, events, bibliographic resources, and a gateway to additional resources. CAIN represents an excellent starting point for teachers and students interested in learning more about the conflict in Northern Ireland.

Centre for the Study of Conflict
    The Centre for the Study of Conflict (CSC) falls under the umbrella of the Conflict Archive on the Internet (CAIN) project at the University of Ulster. The fundamental goal of the CSC is "to carry out research on the conflict in Ireland, to encourage the growth of an academic community involved in conflict research, and to support this process through seminars, publications, visiting scholars and liaison with other institutions." CSC offers a variety of publications that focus on important dimensions of the conflict in Northern Ireland.
The Irish Internet Hub
    The Irish Internet Hub provides an extensive collection of links to information related to all things Irish. For example, the IIH provides links to maps, political parties, political organizations, governmental information, photos and information concerning the Loyalist and Republican murals in Northern Ireland, current events and much more. The IIH is a good place to start.
Irish History on the Web
    Irish History on the Web is a great resource for all aspects of Irish history. This site includes general Irish history sites, republican history, unionist history, timelines, documents, and links to other Irish history sites.
The Path to Peace (The Irish Times)
    The Path to Peace is a special report developed by the Irish Times Newspaper online. This site features a wealth of information about conflict and peace in Northern Ireland. This site is a good source for well-balanced information.
The Referendum on Northern Ireland
    As the official site of the Referendum on Northern Ireland, this site provides general information about the referendum including the text of the agreement, a section highlighting the pros and cons, and insight into the peace process.
Close Up Foundation Special Topic Page: Northern Ireland
    The page traces the political history of Northern Ireland, detailing the events that led up to the "Good Friday Agreement" of April 1998. It also describes the political impact of this past summer”s Ballymoney and Omagh bombings. As with Close Up's other Special Topic Pages, the Northern Ireland page was designed with high school students and teachers in mind. It features a background article, a timeline of "The Troubles," a teaching activity, and annotated hyperlinks to additional sources of information and analysis.
FRONTLINE: Behind the Mask: The IRA and Sinn Fein
    This site highlights the PBS Frontline program entitled Behind the Mask: The IRA and Sinn Fein, which aired October 21, 1997. The program and web site feature an interview with Dr. Paul Arther, professor of politics at the University of Ulster and Senior Fellow at the United States Institute of Peace, as well as poems, songs, documents and general information about the IRA and Sinn Fein.
The Irish Times
    The Irish Times web site offers up-to-date information about the situation in Ireland including a section entitled The Path to Peace.
Live News Ireland
    Live News Ireland is an excellent source for current information and news directly from Ireland. You can search for specific information, or subscribe to the daily news service that delivers updates directly to your e-mail account.

    The WWW Virtual Library on the Middle East is an excellent resource for teachers and students. This site offers bibliographic resources, a search engine, country-specific and regional information, a subject guide to the Middle East, information about religion, and links to online journals and newspapers. This is one of the best resources available on the Internet!
The Arab-Israeli Conflict
    This site is part of the University of Michigan Documents Center. It represents a well-balanced and informative collection of links and resources related to conflict in the Middle East.
The Origins and Evolution of the Palestine Problem (1917-1998) Yahoo Headlines: Israeli-Palestinian Conflict
    A good resource for current information about the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict including links to audio and print news reports, the United Nations, and information about the peace process. Provides information from all perspectives.
Struggle for Peace
    This site, developed by CNN, hosts information about conflict and peace in the Middle East. The site is divided into four different parts: background, key players, maps and related sites. Another good source of up-to-date information on the situation in the Middle East.
The Anatomy of the Arab-Israeli Conflict
    The Anatomy of the Arab-Israeli Conflict offers an interesting perspective on the history, issues, and current events surrounding the conflict in the Middle East. This site was developed by Out There News.
The Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard University
    The Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard University offers a good collection of links and resources related to the Middle East. The Teaching Resource Center publishes a regular newsletter and hosts events specifically for primary and secondary educators. Use the online form to join the Teaching Resource Center mailing list.
US State Department: Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs
    The Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs deals with U.S. foreign policy and U.S. diplomatic relations with the countries in the Near East and North Africa region. Browse this site for issues in the news, regional and country information, press statements, and other general resources.
The United States and the Search for Peace in the Middle East
    This site is maintained by the United States Information Service. It provides updated information concerning the Middle East peace process, as well as numerous documents related to conflict and peace in the Middle East.

    This gopher information server provides links to a large variety of documents and information related to Arab-Israeli relations and the peace process, Israeli government, policy speeches and briefings by Israeli leaders, Israel and the United Nations, terrorism, as well as maps, news and current events. Some resources are available in Hebrew.
IGuide: Your Guide to Israeli Internet
    IGuide is a clearinghouse of information related to Israel and the Internet. Resources are organized by topic, or you can use the search engine to find specific information. This site is available in English or Hebrew.

    AfricaNews Online offers indepth information about the conflict in the Great Lakes region of Central Africa. FRONTLINE: The Triumph of Evil
    PBS Frontline has developed this gripping web site as a follow-up to the Frontline episode, The Triumph of Evil," that aired January 26, 1999. The Triumph of Evil web site features interviews with UN and US officials and writer Philip Gourevitch author of "We Regret to Inform You that Tomorrow We Will Be Killed With Our Families: Stories From Rwanda." This site also offers a timeline of US/UN actions, readings on genocide, and resources for educators. Tapes and transcripts of the PBS Frontline program can also be ordered from this site.
Africa Policy Information Center
    The Africa Policy Information Center publishes a variety of documents and reports related to the situation in Africa. A good source of information about U.S. foreign policy and the role of the U.S. in Africa. Use their keyword search engine to locate relevant information.
Africa: Secretary-General's Report to the UN Security Council (April 1998)
    Secretary-General Kofi Annan's report to the UN Security Council concerning The Causes of Conflict and the Promotion of Durable Peace and Sustainable Development in Africa. According to Secretary-General Annan, "For the United Nations there is no higher goal, no deeper commitment and no greater ambition than preventing armed conflict."
Genocide in Rwanda: U.S. Complicity by Silence
    Published by CovertAction Quarterly, this article implicates the United States and the United Nations in the Genocide that occured in Rwanda.
War Criminal Watch
    War Criminal Watch was created by the Coalition for International Justice to track and publicize the accused criminal acts of indicted suspects for war crimes committed in the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda.     This site, developed by ABC News, features a wealth of information about the conflict in the Balkans including an historical timeline, an interactive atlas of the region, a who's who section, and information regarding the prospects for peace in the region. A very good source for general information.
Former Yugoslavia Information (AEGEE)
    The Association des Etats Generaux des Etudiants de l'Europe developed this web site. You can use this site to follow links to information about current events in the region, browse their collection of maps, or use the search engine to find specific information about the conflict in the Balkans.
Press Now
    Press Now offers current news information for the Balkans including: Albania, Kosovo, Bosnia and Hercegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, and Serbia. According the web site "Press Now supports free media in the Balkan Countries."

    This site has been developed by the Russian and East European Network Information Center at the University of Texas-Austin. This web page offers hundreds of links to information about Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Serbia and Montenegro, etc.
Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina (OSCE)
    The OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina is responsible for monitoring elections, democratization efforts, human rights advances, etc. Visit this site to learn more about their goals, objectives and accomplishments.
CNN Mission: Peace (The Balkan Crisis)
    The CNN Balkan Crisis web site provides information about the current situation in the former Yugoslavia, as well as well-balanced information about the roots of the conflict, the warring factions, and recent events and daily reports. This site also includes a search engine, a photo gallery entitled Images of War, links to analysis of the conflict, and much more.
Yugoslav Peace Watch
    Yugoslav Peace Watch provides links and resources related to the conflict in the former Yugoslavia. This site is a good place to go for background information and updates concerning the peace process.
Faces of Sorrow: Agony in the Former Yugoslavia
    Faces of Sorrow is a collection of chilling photographs that illustrate various aspects of the conflict in the former Yugoslavia. "The more than 50 photographs taken by 36 photojournalists from 14 countries in this exhibit depict unspeakable acts of destruction waged by the warring parties from the beginning of the war in Croatia in 1991 through the recent peace accord in Bosnia and Herzegovina." The photographs are supplemented by articles and stories written by journalists from The Washington Post, FRANCE 3, and The Irish Times, as well as individuals from Human Rights Watch.

The Bosnian Virtual Fieldtrip

    The Bosnian Virtual Fieldtrip allows visitors to browse background information about Bosnia and the conflict, visit and learn about key players and places and learn more about the Dayton Peace Accords and life after the historic agreements. This site contains a large quantity of information, links and resources.
The War in Bosnia Through the Eyes of Its Children
    This site features a wonderful collection of photographs of people and places throughout Bosnia, as well as a collection of drawings done by children from Tuzla depicting their perceptions of the conflict in their country. Highly recommended.
Bosnia: Uncertain Paths to Peace (New York Times)
    Bosnia: Uncertain Paths to Peace is a very powerful collection of photographs and dialogue related to the conflict that ravaged the former Yugoslavia. The site offers an interactive photo essay, forums for discussion, and general information and resources.
BosNet
    Bosnet is a voluntary organization, focusing on connecting people and friends of Bosnia and Herzegovina across the world. A good place to go for general information about Bosnia, as well as information specific to the conflict.
Bosnia Home Page
    The Bosnia Home Page at Caltech offers maps, links and resources related to the conflict in Ex-Yugoslavia.
Kosovo

Kosova Crisis Center

    This site was developed by students from the University of Prishtina in Kosova. The Kosova Crisis Center web site is dedicated to "Exposing the Serbian terror in the world." This site offers a history of the rising tensions in the region, a platform for student action, and links to information about the conflict in Kosova.
Washington Post: Kosovo Special Report
    The Washington Post: Kosovo Special Report offers up-to-date information about the situation in Kosovo. Includes an overview, links, latest information, and a discussion forum.
BBC: Kosovo Special Report
    The BBC: Kosovo Special Report provides general information, news coverage, interviews with key players, and a search engine for specific queries concerning the conflict in Kosovo.
Kosovo Information Center: Daily Reports
    This site is maintained by the Hellenic Resource Network. It offers daily news reports on the situation in Kosovo. The Kosovo Information Center produces six editions per day, providing the most up-to-date information available.
The Economist: The Balkans Survey
    The Balkans Survey, which appeared in the Economist in January 1998, helps to place the conflict in Kosovo in the context of the larger Balkan conflict. This article provides a contemporary and historical look at "Europe's roughest neighborhood."

Serbian Unity Congress

    The Serbian Unity Congress provides general information about Serbia, as well as extensive information about the conflict from a Serbian perspective. Click on "politics" to view "Setting the Record Straight: War in Former Yugoslavia," a collection of pictures, news stories and resources. Caution: this site contains pictures that may not be suitable for some viewers.
Yugoslavia.com
    Based at the University of Maryland, Yugoslavia.com focuses on the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, which includes the republics of Montenegro and Serbia. This site does not mention the conflict.
ex-YU Press
    The ex-YU Press offers a sampling of current articles translated from the former and current Yugoslavian press. Ex-YU Press is an interesting source for current information concerning the conflict in the Balkans.

    This site is a good resource for information about Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Domovina.net features a news archive and links to a variety of interesting web resources.
Welcome to Croatia
    A good source for general information about Croatian history and culture. Some limited information about the conflict including a site entitled, War Against Croatia 1991-1995, a collection of resources related to the conflict in Ex-Yugoslavia from a Croatian point of view.
News from Croatia
    News from Croatia was developed under the supervision of the Ministry of Science and Technology of the Republic of Croatia. This site details the latest events in Croatia that took place after Croatian forces reintegrated Western Slavonia into the legal system of the Republic of Croatia. News from Croatia features photographs, video clips, a chronology of events and personal stories.
Hina News Line
    Hina News Line is a Croatian News Agency's online news service and bulletins. This site is in English and Croatian.
Croatian Institute for Culture and Information
    The Croatian Institute for Culture and Information provides general information about Croatian politics, education, culture, and history.
Croatian Web Central
    Focuses mainly on general information about Croatia including news, current events, history, culture, etc. This site also includes a search engine for specific research interests, as well as some information about the conflict in the former Yugoslavia.
Croatia Net
    Croatia Net provides general information about the history and culture of Croatia. You have to dig deep to find any information concerning the conflict in the Balkans.

    The United States Institute of Peace (USIP) is an outstanding source of information concerning conflict and peace worldwide. They publish numerous reports concerning the situation in many countries and regions in conflict, as well as reports on issues related to conflict and peace. Many of the resources that they have developed are available on-line, or you can contact them for free copies.
The Carter Center
    The Carter Center in Atlanta, Georgia is a nonprofit, nonpartisan public policy institute founded by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter in 1982. The Center is dedicated to fighting, among other things, conflict and discrimination through collaborative initiatives in the areas of democratization and development, global health, and urban revitalization. Check out their extensive collection of links and resources.
International Peace Research Association (IPRA)
    The International Peace Research Association (IPRA) web site offers a wealth of information and resources concerning peace studies worldwide. Visit this site to learn about membership in the IPRA or follow their links to important sites dealing with peace studies.
Conciliation Resources
    Conciliation Resources, supports the sustained activities of those working to prevent or transform violent conflict into opportunities for social, political and economic change based on more just relationships. Among other things we produce Accord: An International Review of Peace Initiatives. The full text of all issues of Accord and information about other CR programmes are available online.
Peace and Conflict Resources
    Peace and Conflict is a clearinghouse of information concerning Peace Studies on the WWW. This site features a directory and links to peace studies resources including: films, bibliographies, peace studies institutes and centers, and a search engine for more specific research.
Search for Common Ground
    Search for Common Ground Online seeks to transform how the world deals with conflict--away from adversarial approaches toward cooperative solutions. This site provides information concerning Search for Common Ground initiatives in the Middle East, Burundi, Angola, Iran, as well their project on race relations in the United States.
Peace Brigades International
    Peace Brigades International is a unique grassroots organization exploring and implementing nonviolent approaches to peacekeeping and support for basic human rights. By invitation, PBI sends teams of volunteers to areas of political repression and conflict. PBI provides protective international accompaniment for individuals and organizations that have been threatened by political violence or that are otherwise at risk.

    Common Ground is a weekly radio series produced by the Stanley Foundation. Since 1980 Common Ground has been covering world affairs and the people who shape events.     Hotzones is a very interesting site developed by the School of Journalism at Columbia University. Hotzones provides information intended for journalists working as foreign correspondents in countries or regions in conflict including the Balkans, Rwanda, Burundi, Cambodia, etc.
Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights

    According to Mrs. Mary Robinson, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, "...today's human rights violations are the causes of tomorrow's conflicts." The UNHCHR web site provides current information concerning human rights issues including: the International Criminal Court, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Human Rights Education, etc. Use the search engine to find information about specific topics and issues.
Amnesty International
    Amnesty International consistently provides valuable information about human rights around the world. Visit the AI Library for information about human rights in specific countries or regions, learn more about current Amnesty International campaigns, or read a copy of the most recent AI Annual Report.
The UN Conference on the Establishment of an International Criminal Court
    This is the official site of the UN conference held in Rome where a statute for the International Criminal Court was adopted on July 17, 1998. According to Kofi Annan, "There can be no global justice unless the worst of crimes--crimes against humanity--are subject to the law. In this age more than ever we recognize that the crime of genocide against one people truly is an assault on us all--a crime against humanity. The establishment of an International Criminal Court will ensure that humanity's response will be swift and will be just."
International Criminal Tribunals (ICTY/ICTR)
    This web site is maintained by the Coalition for International Justice. It features general information about the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) and the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY). In addition, this site offers documents and information from the UN related to the formation of the ICTR/ICTY.
Coalition for an International Criminal Court (CICC)
    The CICC is the primary NGO provider of online information about the proposed permanent International Criminal Court. This site provides indepth information about the ICC, various documents related to the ICC, as well as information concerning the recent UN conference held in Rome to discuss the future of the International Criminal Court.

    An extensive collection of links to human rights and humanitarian resources and organizations around the world.
International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)
    The International Committee for the Red Cross acts to help all victims of war and internal violence, attempting to ensure implementation of humanitarian rules restricting armed violence. This site offers information about ICRC operations around the world, international humanitarian law, and a thematic subject guide including information about: landmines, children and war, women and war, humanitarian action in armed conflicts, etc.
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees
    The UNHCR web site offers information about refugee issues worldwide including maps, background information, resources for teachers, and a section entitled REFWORLD, sponsored by the UNHCR Centre for Documentation and Research. REFWORLD makes available official documents of the UNHCR and other UN Agencies, country and legal information, and basic reference materials.
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)
    The United States Agency for International Development is an independent government agency that provides economic development and humanitarian assistance to advance U.S. economic and political interests overseas. Visit this site to learn more about how the U.S. is supporting development around the world.
United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA)
    The three primary functions of the OCHA are to serve in the coordination of humanitarian emergency response, policy development and advocacy on humanitarian issues. The OCHA provides a guide to emergency information by country and region, which includes the former Yugoslavia and the Great Lakes region in Africa.
