Beowulf Cluster "Bat Cave" and "Wayne Manor"

This 8 node Beowulf Cluster at UWM is maintained by Dr. B. Wade and Chris Sears of the Numerical Analysis Group, and is used for testing of various parallel algorithms for scientific computing research as well as student seminar projects.   Projects to date have typically involved Domain Decomposition algorithm development for Partial Differential Equations as well as parallel training of artificial neural networks.

Bat Cave contains 8  1 GHZ Pentium III processor nodes, each with 256 MRAM and 20 GB  Hard Drive, and Red Hat Linux 6.2 is the operating system.   The nodes are connected through 100 MB/S speed Ethernet protocol.

It has Lahey Fortran 95 and Gnu gcc (egcs 1.1.2) under MPICH 1.2.4.  Also, GSL, PetSci and Gnuplot are employed.

The 4 node Beowulf Cluster called "Wayne Manor," shown at right, at UWM is maintained by Dr. B. Wade and Chris Sears of the Numerical Analysis Group, and is used for debugging purposes in testing of various parallel algorithms for scientific computing research as well as student seminar projects.

Wayne Manor contains 4  900 MHZ Pentium III processor nodes in two dual CPU Dell boxes, each box with 512 MRAM and 20 GB  Hard Drive.  Red Hat Linux 6.2 is the operating system.   The boxes are connected through 100 MB/S speed Ethernet protocol, while the two CPUs in each box share memory.

These names have been chosen based on a Batman theme. The slower cluster used for first run debugging is called Wayne Manor because it is the first entrance to "Bruce Wayne's" place, while the Bat Cave is where the real work is done, i.e., final testing runs for the purpose of timing.

Due to several experiences with hackers, each OS is heavily cut down to the essentials and very high security has been put in place.

These two clusters (12 machines) are housed in an ordinary faculty office with only one fan sending air into the space above the false ceiling.  The room temperature tends to hover about 80 degrees F.
