Description

The city of Sheffield has an ideal location in the heart of England, less than three hours north of London and on the edge of the Peak District National Park.  With a population of over half a million, the "largest village in England" is actually the fourth largest city, with a mixture of modern buildings and historic sites.

The University of Sheffield was founded in the 1820's with the opening of its Medical School.  It now operates under a Royal Charter, granted in 1905 by King Edward VII.  Today it is one of England's larger universities with over 14,000 enrolled students.  The University of Sheffield offers a wide variety of courses in many different disciplines.  In the past few years, the University of Sheffield has been recognized for achieving excellence in a wide range of aspects from teaching to the student union to the accommodations.

This vibrant campus with top-notch academics in a friendly environment offers UWM students a great opportunity to take on the challenge of a year-long exchange experience.

Dates

Students participate in this exchange program for a full, academic year from September to late June or for the spring semester from January until late June.

Eligibility

Applicants must be enrolled as degree seeking students at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee.  All participants must have at least sophomore status and carry a 3.0 GPA (4.0 scale).  In addition to written application materials and letters of reference, an Overseas Programs faculty committee may interview applicants.

Courses

Students may take any of the courses Sheffield has to offer.  Sheffield's strong areas of study are as follows:  Engineering, Architecture and Urban Planning, Natural Sciences, Business, Economics, Social Sciences, and Internships.  For a comprehensive list of all the classes Sheffield offers please visit the university website:  www.shef.ac.uk/international/

Cost

UWM students pay UWM tuition, $450 administrative fee and $37/month for health insurance.

Housing

Participants are given two housing options: (1) dormitory rooms including a meal plan; (2) university-owned shared apartments, meals and utilities are separate.
