University of Birmingham Exchange
When visiting this modern European city with its spectacular architecture, exciting new city center, world-renowned conference facilities and multicultural society, it is difficult to believe that it was once a small forest settlement, back in Saxon times. The city has grown and is now the country's second largest with a population of over one million. Continuous redevelopment and innovation have ensured that the city has evolved, not just in size but also in status. Set in 230 acres of beautiful parkland campus, the University of Birmingham is one of the United Kingdom's foremost research institutions. Internationally-renowned research undertaken at Birmingham influences the modern world and enriches the quality of teaching, bringing knowledge from the frontiers of discovery directly to the classroom. The range of courses offered at the University of Birmingham is one of the broadest amongst UK universities, creating a diverse and dynamic community for students and academic staff to enjoy. The main university campus at Edgbaston is outstanding among UK universities. It is spacious and attractive with lawns, trees, a lake and pleasant spaces between the different buildings. It was one of the first 'redbrick' universities and is said to be the origin of the term. The nearby Selly Oak campus is situated on a beautiful “garden” site just five miles from the City center. The spacious eighty-acre site is green and leafy, with an interesting mix of old and new buildings and with all the facilities grouped together. For the day-to-day life of staff and students, the pleasant campuses are ideal places to work and live with practically all academic, sports and social facilities grouped together. Students may participate in the University of Birmingham exchange for an academic year or during spring semester. However, the spring semester option is determined on a case-by-case basis depending on availability. Please contact OPP for further information.
