Description

Vigo, known as the “Gateway to the Atlantic,” is the largest city in northeastern Spain with a population of about 300,000. It is located on a 20 mile long estuary and boasts beautiful beaches and outstanding water sports facilities. Spring and summer are quite warm and sunny, while fall and winter are rainy. Major industries include fishing, shipbuilding, and the manufacture of Citroën cars.

In contrast to most universities in Spain, University of Vigo is one of the most modern and well facilitated. It was created in 1990 after it split from the old university of Santiago de Compostela. Its modern exterior, despite having once been a part of one of the oldest universities in Spain, still maintains traditional northern Spanish customs as is shown in the motto by which it encourages its students to live: Equality, Solidarity, Democracy and Freedom. Being in the province of Galicia, Galician is spoken but Spanish is widely spoken as well.

There are many academic advantages to attending this university, especially in the fields of Sciences and Engineering. The university offers every kind of degree from diplomas to PhDs and classes are taught in Spanish and Galacian. Teaching is spread over three campuses located in Ourense, Pontevedra and Vigo, three of the major cities in the region of Galicia. These 3 campuses house nearly 30,000 students from abroad and Spain.  UWM students will take all of their courses at the Vigo campus.

One of the University of Vigo´s top priorities is to preserve and develop its status as an international university.  The University is a leading participant in the European mobility project. It welcomes many students from abroad and sends its own students to study in similar foreign institutions. This is made possible by the International Office which is always at the forefront of university life. Spread across the three campuses are various representatives of the International Office who provide support and guidance in matters concerning studying abroad or coming to Vigo to study which makes this university a very popular place at which to study.
