Spain: Galician Culture Through the Eyes of

Santiago de Compostela

July 13 - August 9, 2008

Application deadline: March 14, 2008 with $250 deposit

Overview:

This unique program takes place in Santiago de Compostela, Galicia's enchanting capital in Northwestern Spain, a UNESCO heritage city and an ancient site of pilgrimage. Students will examine the culture of Galicia, a Celtic bridge to understanding the past and present of the Hispanic and Portuguese-speaking worlds.  Culture class discussions will focus on the factors that have contributed to the making of the identity of Galicia in such areas as geography, history and archaeology, politics and society, language and literature, traditions, mythology, religion, music, and cinema.  Language classes will provide either intensive oral practice in Spanish or the beginning semester of Galego. The program includes various weekend excursions and fieldtrips. Galicia is a country of outstanding beauty, boasting lush green valleys, fantastic beaches, beautiful timeless cities, and imposing mountainous regions.

Credits:

3 in Galician Culture (Sp377, U/G) or Spanish Conversation (Sp318), and a possible 3 in either Galician language (Sp123) or Spanish Immersion (Sp315)

Participation:

Open to all US college/university students.  Preference will be given to UWM students.

Estimated Cost*: $3,000

* Cost includes accommodation, in-country travel and excursions.

Program fees are based on a realistic estimate of participants. The cost may change if the exchange rate fluctuates or the minimum number of participants is not achieved.  Cost includes accommodation, breakfasts, lunches, and most excursions. This cost does not include airfare. 

**There are fee differentials for non-Wisconsin residents.

***Financial Aid, Scholarships, and Grants can be used for this program.
