Overview: The primary goal of this unique course is to introduce and sensitize students to individuals with disabilities. Offering a different cultural perspective, students will travel to Brazil to study interpersonal and socio-cultural factors affecting the lives of people with disabilities. Using a comparative approach, students will study such things as prejudice, stereotyping, discrimination against individuals with disabilities; access and independent living for individuals with disabilities; and personal, psychological, social, legal and ethical issues related to full participation of people with disabilities in society. Student will learn to explain and use common global language and person-centered language and also understand the International Classification System of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) developed by members of the World Health Organization (WHO). Students may earn credits in health care administration by participating in this program. Credits: 3 undergraduate credits in Health Care Administration (HCA 297/497) Participation: This program is open to all US college/university students. Preference will be given to UWM students. Estimated Cost*: $1,145 *Program fees are based on a realistic estimate of participants. The cost may change if the exchange rate fluctuates or the minimum number of participants is not achieved. **There are fee differentials for graduate students and non-Wisconsin residents. ***Financial Aid, Scholarships, and Grants can be used for this program.
