Overview:

The issue of maintaining folk cultures—and the allocation of local, regional, national, and transnational resources that such maintenance might involve—has been a continuing debate in the Celtic regions of Europe.  Ireland, Wales, and Scotland have “devolved” regional parliaments and assemblies in order to deal with some issues; Cornwall and Brittany are also discussing ways to maintain their folk traditions. There is an increasing interest in such pan-Celtic festivals as Brittany’s Festival Interceltique in Lorient and Glasgow’s Celtic Connections in which Celticism is seen as a transnational issue. Students will be asked to consider the maintenance of Celtic folk culture from all of these various perspectives.

In this three-week course, students will experience the folk culture by immersion in classes in the Breton language, music, and dance. Many of these events will be sponsored by Amzer Nevez, the Breton cultural institute at which the course will be taught.  Through readings and on-site lectures, students will explore the history of Brittany, its culture, and its relationship with France and with other Celtic regions. They will also discuss with guest speakers such contemporary issues as youth emigration, impact on the folk culture of new residents who don’t share the culture, and tourism as both an incentive for and a divisive force in maintaining a folk culture.
