Programs-Summer 2007 International Research Experience for Students (IRES) The Development of Indicators of Environmental Stress and Sustainable Development in the Danube Delta, Romania June 23 - August 4, 2007* (*Tentative dates in Romania.) Application deadline: March 15, 2007 with $250 deposit Students must also complete a supplemental form in addition to all other application materials. Overview: Students will participate in a research experience program in the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve along the Black Sea Coast. Over a six-week stay in Romania, participants will develop their understanding of human-environment interactions in a location of the historical, cultural, economic, and environmental crossroads of Southeastern Europe and Asia. Students will work as part of interdisciplinary research teams, together with Romanian students and researchers, to examine the relationships between environmental stressors, ecological integrity and the human contexts of sustainable development within one of the most distinctive wetland ecosystems in the Northern Hemisphere. This course will integrate natural science, socioeconomic considerations and public policy approaches. Research projects will be both demanding and highly interactive, utilizing workshops, seminars, language training, and technology training, as well as qualitative research exercises. Some predeparture language and research training workshops will be held in Milwaukee. Students will participate in the development of innovative interdisciplinary research designs. Students are expected to collaborate across disciplinary boundaries and engage respectfully across cultures. Credits: Six undergraduate research credits to be allocated between Natural Sciences (Environmental Sciences or Biology) and Social Sciences (Anthropology or Geography), depending on a student's research project. Participation: Open to all US college/university students by competitive application. Preference may be given to students enrolled in UW System schools. Estimated Cost: Most participant costs will be paid for by a grant from the National Science Foundation; including airfare, in-country transportation, meals, and lodging.
