Description

Nanzan University is located in the rolling hills overlooking metropolitan Nagoya.  Nagoya is a leading metropolis of international trade, industry, and culture in Japan.  The greater Nagoya area is home to over 7 million people and, in recent years, the region has been one of the main focal points of development in the country.

Nanzan is not so much a single institution as a complex of educational establishments gathered under the organizational umbrella of what is known as “Nanzan Gakuen.” This educational complex consists of the university and its research institutes and study centers, a women's junior college, and three high schools.

Committed to free inquiry and responsible scholarship, the University has the advantage of a low student–teacher ratio. Small classes and seminars provide an effective setting for interpersonal communication through which human dignity becomes a lived experience and an international outlook develops naturally.

The Center for Japanese Studies (CJS), where UWM students take their classes, has been a leader in Japanese language studies since its founding in 1974. The goal of the Center is to help each student develop a better understanding of the Japanese people and language. By living and learning in Japan, students at the Center experience the “real Japan” together with a wide cross-section of people from other countries and cultures. The result is a dynamic group of students from many different backgrounds united in their goal to discover Japan.

This program offers intensive language instruction, lecture courses in Japanese Studies, Japanese Art course, home stays, field trips, and guided independent study.
