Description

It is no coincidence that a centre of higher education has been established in Jönköping. The area is well known for its engineering skills and its entrepreneurial spirit and has long-standing business, commercial and communication traditions.

Jönköping has 120,000 inhabitants and is one of the ten largest municipalities in Sweden. Jönköping has always been a strategically important centre, primarily due to its geographic location. The business environment is dynamic, diverse and successful with nearly 9 600 small and medium-sized companies. There are also many large international companies, such as IKEA, Husqvarna/Electrolux and SAAB based in Jönköping. The region is characterized by its innovative climate and has become a communications hub, well known for transport and logistics, as well as for data- and telecommunications.

Jönköping is close to everything and has a beautiful and inspiring environment in which to live and work.  UWM maintains partnerships with two of the four schools under the umbrella of Jönköping University:  Jönköping International Business School (JIBS) and The School of Engineering.  All course at these two schools are taught in English.

Jönköping International Business School (JIBS) conducts research and offers undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate programs and executive education.  JIBS was launched in 1994 as an alternative to the already well-established business schools in Sweden. JIBS is a leading school in the areas of entrepreneurship and business renewal, within a genuinely international environment. Today JIBS employs about 20 professors and 70 doctoral candidates in the core areas business administration, economics, political science, business law and informatics.  Most of the research conducted at JIBS is part of international networks. About 20 percent of the business school’s 175 employees are foreign citizens or of foreign origin. JIBS has taken the lead within the Swedish system to harmonize the undergraduate and graduate education towards a global labor market and research environment.

The School of Engineering focuses on preparing students for achievement in business and developing specific working methods aimed at small and medium-sized enterprises.

Courses have a broad technical knowledge base, to equip students with engineering skills and stimulate them towards gaining an entrepreneurial spirit. The programs also provide knowledge from topic areas other than technology such as leadership, communication, business and ecology. Internationalization and collaboration with industry are also driving principles at the school.  About 1,800 students are registered at the School of Engineering. The school is one of the largest in the country to grant bachelor engineering degrees. In addition several master engineering programs are offered. The School of Engineering has developed research and development projects in close collaboration with industry through host company programs and graduate work.
