Programs- Winterim 2009

Globalization: The Making

(and Un-Making) of an Indian City

Dates: TBD

Application deadline: Oct 15, 2008 with $250 deposit

Overview:

SARUP's India Winterim welcomes students from architecture, global studies, art history, geography and urban studies majors. This year shall include a focused study on the city of Chandigarh, leading to an urban design studio in close partnership with two local schools in Ahmedabad & Chandigarh. Designed by the iconic architect Le Corbusier, Chandigarh is the quintessential city par excellence for urban designers. It presents a unique tabula rasa based one man's vision, fed by the growing aspirations of a newly-forged democracy and political control. Today, fifty years after its inception and eventual inclusion in UNESCO's World Heritage List of Cultural Icons, Chandigarh remains an enigma in its successes and failures. How does it connect to the past, present and future? How "Indian" is its embedded Indian-ness? What shall the city be in the decades to come? These are among the plethora of questions the students shall encounter.

This trip to India shall also include visits to New Delhi, Ahmedabad & Agra. All students will attend two pre-departure classes. For SARUP students, work done in India will continue into a Spring 09 design studio (ARCH 645/855).
