Description

Students participating in the FIPSE Canada exchange choose between the University of Manitoba and the Universite de Montreal.

University of Manitoba

Winnipeg is a truly vibrant, modern, cosmopolitan center renown for it's old world traditions, charm and cultural diversity. In Winnipeg you will meet just over 600,000 of the friendliest people, making it easy to call it your home. Winnipeggers enjoy a four-season climate. Summer days are long and hot, but an hours' drive will land you at some of the best beaches in North America. In the winter our city becomes a winter wonderland, making Winnipeg the "Christmas Capitol of Canada".

The University of Manitoba offers a diverse range of programs, including a full range of professional programs. It offers masters and doctoral programs and opportunities for post-doctoral education in many disciplines. The university has special access programs for those who do not have the background required for university entrance and the continuing education division offers a wide range of professional and certificate programs.

Most students complete the first year of their degree programs in University 1, a year that allows students to take the specific courses required for one or more faculties and schools, and at the same time be exposed to courses in several disciplines or professions.

The University of Manitoba is a research-intensive university and is home to 41 research centers and institutes ranging in scope from applied ethics, aging, cell biology and higher education to health policy, earth observation science and theoretical physics. These centers and institutes provide unique interdisciplinary educational and training opportunities and are a valuable resource for the community at large. An industry liaison office facilitates the commercialization of university research and links the research expertise of the university with business and industry as well as with government agencies and other universities.

The main campus is in the Winnipeg suburb of Fort Garry, about 12 km from the city centre, and the medical/dental campus is located adjacent to the Health Sciences Centre, in central Winnipeg, the province’s largest tertiary care complex. Clinical research and medical teaching are concentrated at this hospital and the St. Boniface General Hospital.

Universite de Montreal

Montreal has been at the crossroads of North American history, culture and commerce for more than 300 years. Today it is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city of 3 million where English and French cultures thrive side by side, flavored by tastes of other world cultures that new Canadians bring with them every day. At the same time, Old Montreal has a 17th century European charm that is unique in North America.

Montreal has exciting professional sports teams, Grand Prix racing, one of the largest tennis tournaments in the world, and more restaurants than you can count (Montrealers think their bagels are the best -- have one!). It hosts the world's largest jazz festival, the Just for Laughs comedy festival, two of the world's most important film festivals and innumerable concerts and shows. Montreal is close to the Laurentian Mountains, the Eastern Townships of Quebec, upper New York State and New England. Montreal is also student-friendly. With four universities and the largest university population in Canada, students are a vital part of the city's dynamism and energy.

Founded in 1878, the Université de Montréal, with its two affiliated schools, the École Polytechnique and the HEC Montréal, is now the largest university in Quebec and the second largest in Canada. With over 55,000 students from around the world and some 10,000 employees, the Université de Montréal awards close to 10,000 diplomas at every university level. Deeply rooted in Montreal and dedicated to its international mission, the Université de Montréal is one of the top universities in the French-speaking world.

Situated on the northern slope of Mount Royal, the Université de Montréal boasts an exceptional natural setting. Combining green space and modern architecture, the campus is steeped in the great tradition of North American universities. With over 30 buildings, some of which are connected by an underground network, the campus is dominated by the majestic Art-Deco tower of the Roger Gaudry Building-a distinctive feature of Montreal's unique silhouette. Côte des Neiges, one of the city's most cosmopolitan and vibrant districts, offers the university community a wide range of shops and services, including a cultural centre, bookstores, boutiques, restaurants and cafes.
