University of Georgia Study Abroad Program

Cortona, Italy

Description

Cortona is built on the crest of Monte Sant-Egidio and is surrounded by a massive ancient city-wall. Looking from the top of the city wall, one can see one of the finest and widest views in Italy; the wide fertile plain of the Valdichiana, with the mountains of Siena at the far end and the great shining expanse of Lake Trasimeno in the distance.

Students can study art in beautiful Cortona at the Lamar Dodd School of Art. The small, safe town located in Tuscany offers numerous cultural activities and a rich, historical environment where students can easily merge with the normal lifestyle of a typical Italian community. This program is designed to provide a challenging opportunity for the serious student who wishes to combine international travel with an intensive period of studio and classroom work. Courses are taught by professors from UGA and other universities in the US and Italy. Courses are taught in English; however, Italian classes are taught partially in Italian. Fall and Spring semester students are required to take an art history class.

During this exciting semester program, students will take day-long field trips to nearby locations such as Perugia, Assisi, Arezzo, Florence, Montepulciano, San Gimignano, Siena, Ravenna and others.  Overnight trips to Rome, Venice, Naples and various other cities are also offered.

Students have access to new technology, including: 14 new G5’s a large format color printer, standard printer and scanners. There is also an on-site library of well-selected volumes related to the courses offered in Cortona. Also, the public library in Cortona is open for those who read Italian.
