Location: Chiang Rai is a mountainous province located at the
northern tip of Thailand bordering Myanmar (Burma) on the north and Laos on the east, Phayao and Lampang on the south and Chiang Mai on the southwest. It is 785 km. from Bangkok and 182 km. from Chiang Mai and can be reached by plane. Many visitors to Chiang Mai make a side trip to Chiang Rai to admire its scenic beauty, to observe its hill tribes and to see its historic sites.
The City: The city of Chiang Rai, situated in the area with the coolest weather in Thailand, has grown rapidly for a decade; but it remains casual and intimate. People know their neighbors. Crime poses little danger to the law-abiding, and life, though sedate, need not be boring. People tend to be open, honest and friendly. Opportunities and adventure remain available to the properly prepared, and a wealth of cultural diversity can enrich any who make the effort to explore.
