Online Internet Guide

Developed by the Center for International Education

This online Internet Resource Guide has been developed by the Center for International Education (CIE) at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) and the UW System Institute for Global Studies for participants of the 2003 Global Studies Summer Institute (GSSI).

The Global Studies Summer Institute is an annual three-day program intended to provide K-16 educators with an opportunity to learn about and discuss contemporary international issues and their practical applications in the classroom.

The 2003 Global Studies Summer Institute, entitled “Youth Culture and Commerce in a Globalized World,” explores whether there is such a thing as “global youth” bound together through globalized commerce. Do young people around the world who purchase similar fashion, music, movies, and maybe even food, also hold similar views on culture, family, education, and religion? Do similarities in youth culture around the world outweigh traditional ways of thinking and living? And does globalization for young people necessarily mean Americanization?

In addition to examining the role of children and teenagers as consumers, the summer institute also tackles the issue of young people as producers in a global economy and looks at their lifestyles. Finally, we will discuss how to educate young people about youth culture and commerce in a globalized world. These issues are discussed from various perspectives in websites, articles, photographs, and videos provided by this guide.
