The Fulbright Scholars Programs
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Center for International Education urges students, faculty, and administrators to learn more about and consider applying for Fulbright grants. This page provides information about the Fulbright Scholars Programs.

Under the auspices of the U.S. Department of State, the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES), a division of the Institute of International Education, administers the Fulbright Scholars Program
s (FSP). Use the following link to access more complete information about this program: http://www.cies.org/. In addition to the Traditional Fulbright Scholar Program, several other opportunities are available.
I. Traditional Scholar Program

What is it? The U.S. Fulbright Scholar Program sends 900 faculty and professionals each year to 140 countries to lecture and conduct research. A Visiting Fulbright Scholars program runs in conjunction with the U.S. program. Interested individuals should contact the UWM campus Fulbright Program Advisor for application materials and to review application proposals (see contact details above).

Who may apply? Generally, applicants must be U.S. citizens holding a terminal degree. Successful candidates have teaching experience for higher education when applying for lecturing positions
. In addition, applicants must demonstrate foreign language proficiency where required. Preference is given to those who have not had substantial recent experience in the country to which they are applying (U.S. Armed Forces duties are excluded).

Interested individuals should contact the UWM Fulbright Program Advisor who will be able to provide guidance and support for applicants.

When is the application deadline? The application deadline for 2006-2007 is August 1, 2005.
II. Fulbright Distinguished Chairs Program

What is it? This, the most prestigious of the Fulbright programs, grants 39 distinguished lecturing and research awards to U.S. faculty. The one-year positions are available in 13 countries,
mainly Canada and Western Europe.

Who may apply? Candidates should have a prominent record of scholarly accomplishment.

III. Fulbright Senior Specialists Program

What is it? This program provides short-term grants (two to six weeks) for faculty and professionals from the United States to conduct curriculum development, faculty training, and institutional planning in a variety of disciplines. This program differs from the Traditional Scholar Program since a pool of qualified candidates are collected and then matched to projects overseas.

Who may apply? U.S. citizens holding the terminal degree in their field of expertise are eligible to apply for this grant.

IV. Fulbright New Century Scholars Program

What is it? This unique program, also administered by the CIES, brings together an international group of about 30 top U.S. and overseas academics to examine a major transnational theme. Thes
e scholars spend a year working on an issue of global significance. While scholars work independently on their particular areas of expertise, the goal of the program is to develop a combined working paper on the year’s topic. Two group plenary sessi
ons, in March and November , are components of the program. Thirty top academics and professionals collaborate for a year on a topic of global significance.

Who may apply? Faculty and professionals with significant experience and research background in the area of the year’s research theme may apply for this program.

V. Fulbright Alumni Initiatives Awards Program

What is it? This program provides small institutional grants to Fulbright alumni to develop innovative projects that will foster institutionally supported linkages and sustainable, mutually beneficial relationships between the Fulbright scholar's home and host institutions. Projects for joint curriculum development efforts are especially welcome.

Who may apply? Former Fulbright grantees are eligible to apply for this program.

VI. Fulbright International Education Administrators Program

What is it? There are three programs designed specifically for professionals in the field of international education. Selected applicants travel for two to three weeks to Korea, Japan, or Germany and participate in a group program. The purpose of these trips is to familiarize participants with higher education, society, and culture of the host country.

Who may apply? Although eligibility requirements vary slightly depending on the country, in general, applicants must have a few years of full-time professional experience in international education. Successful candidates work for institutions of higher learning and have significant responsibility for international education programming for their school.
