Considering
an application to UW-Milwaukee? If so, this document is for
you. It provides information on:
Application Deadlines
Undergraduate applicants
from overseas:
- Fall 2004 Semester: March 1, 2004
- Spring 2005 Semester: August 1, 2004
Undergraduate applicants from within
the United States
- Fall 2004 Semester: July 1, 2004
- Spring 2005 Semester: December 1, 2004
Graduate student applicants should be
aware that deadlines vary from department to department. In addition, the
application deadline and the deadline to apply for assistantship funding may
differ within a department. The graduate school reviews all applications
and makes the final determination on admission. For more information on this
process please go to
www.uwm.edu/Dept/Grad_Sch/Prospective/app_overview.html.
The graduate school has a Priority Filing Date
of January 1 for the Fall term and a September 1 priority filing date for the
Spring term. Please check with your individual department for department
specific deadlines and recommendations.
The Office of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) strongly
recommends international graduate student applicants to apply to the
University at least nine months before the semester in which they would like
to enroll. Applying in advance allows students sufficient time to receive
appropriate government documents (most typically the I-20) needed to apply for
a student visa to enter the United States.

Undergraduate Admission
The admission process for international students can require four to six weeks,
depending primarily on how soon the applicant can provide the necessary
material.
Please note:. Applications
may be submitted online.
The following materials are required for application processing:
- Application Form. The applicant must complete and sign an
application. This may be a traditional paper application form or the
new online
application.
- Fees. A $35 state-required application fee and a $30 processing fee are required.
You may submit one payment of US$65 payable to the University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Fees may be
paid via a check payable through a U.S. bank
or an international
money order. These fees cannot be waived and are required before your
application will be reviewed. These fees are non-refundable and are not
applicable to any other University fee or bill. Fees are subject to
increase with notification.
- Academic Documentation.
Applicants must submit
original or officially-certified copies of original academic records for all
upper secondary and post-secondary education undertaken, whether or not the
program was completed. Original or attested copies of original
transcripts, marks sheets, grade reports, diplomas or certificates, national
standardized examination results, or other academic course work are required.
Photocopies, scanned, or notarized copies are not accepted as official
documents. Academic records issued in other languages must be submitted and accompanied
by an official (school- issued or -certified) complete and literal English
translation. Official records must be sent directly to UWM from the
institution or examination authority unless the institution or examination
authority does not offer this service. Applicants who have completed course
work at a post-secondary college or university also must submit detailed
course syllabi or course descriptions in order for their course work to be
considered for transfer credit.
- Proof of English Language Proficiency.
- If your native language is not English, you must meet one of the
following five criteria for admission:
- Submit a TOEFL score of 520
(paper-based) or 190 (computer-based)

- Completion of a tertiary level degree at a regionally accredited US
institution within two years prior to enrollment at UWM
- If you do not meet one of the above measures of English proficiency, you
can receive conditional admission to UWM in the following ways:
- Be admitted conditionally to an undergraduate program if you present
scores below TOEFL 500(173)/IELTS 5.5 (or who does not present one of
these scores). You would be required to enroll full time in the ESL
program. Upon achieving a TOEFL score in the 500(173) to 517(187) range,
you would move to Category B.
- Be admitted conditionally to an undergraduate program if you present
scores of TOEFL 500(173) or more, but less than TOEFL 520(190). You would
be allowed to enroll in 6 credits in your academic area on condition that
you concurrently enroll in two classes in the Intensive English Program.
After successfully completing the ESL program through the Immersion level,
or achieving a TOEFL 520(190)/IELTS 5.5, you will be eligible for full
time academic enrollment.
- Financial Certification. Applicants who expect to hold an F-1
or J-1 visa must provide proof of adequate funds to live and study full-time
at UWM.
Estimated costs of studying at UWM are included in the
Proof of
Funding Information Form. An attested letter or statement from your or
your sponsor's bank must prove availability of funds for one year of study at
UWM. Financial verification is
required before UWM can issue an I-20 (for F-1 students) or a DS-2019 (for
J-1 students) necessary to obtain a visa at a U.S. embassy or
consulate abroad or to transfer from another U.S. institution, or to apply
for a change of status to F-1 or J-1.
The University can review your application for academic admissibility before
it receives your financial verification. However, late submission of
this item will delay issuance of your I-20 or DS-2019 if you are admitted.
- Transfer Information Form Applicants who currently reside in
the United States, regardless of their current immigration status, are
required to complete and submit the
Transfer Information Form.
The University can review your application for academic admissibility before
it receives your transfer form. However, late submission of this item
will delay issuance of the I-20 (for F-1 students) or DS-2019 (for J-1
students) if you are admitted.

Proof
of English Proficiency.
All applicants are required to demonstrate proficiency in the English
language. The English Proficiency requirement applies to both graduate degree
and non-degree applicants. This requirement can be met with A, B or C below:
A.
Receipt of a baccalaureate or higher degree from UWM, or another approved
institution where English is the sole language of instruction. International
applicants also must meet the following criteria: 1) the degree must be earned within
two years of your expected enrollment at UWM, and 2) the applicant must have attended
this institution a minimum of 2 years and must have a "C" (2.00 on a
4.00 scale) or better
average on all course work completed.
B.
A minimum TOEFL
score of 550 PBT or 213 CBT. Some graduate departments require a higher TOEFL score;
refer to their admissions materials for more information. TOEFL scores
must be sent directly to the University from ETS and cannot be more than 2
years old. UWM's school code for TOEFL is 1473.
C.
A minimum IELTS score
of 6.5 or higher. Graduate departments may require a higher IELTS score;
refer to their admissions materials for more information.
Please note: A TOEFL
score of less than 500 PBT (173 CBT) or an IELTS score
less than 6.0 does not meet the minimum English proficiency requirement for
any academic program on campus and therefore does not qualify an applicant
for admission. The University will not review your application if you
have a TOEFL score less than 500 PBT (173 CBT) or an IELTS score less than
6.0.
The
requirement for English proficiency is the same for Non-Degree Candidates as
for Degree Candidates.
Admission with an English Deficiency: Applicants with a TOEFL score of 500 to 550
PBT (173-213 CBT) or an IELTS score of 6.0 to 6.5 may be admitted with an
English Deficiency. Your graduate department must approve a request for
admission with English deficiency.
When an applicant is admitted with an English deficiency, the following
procedures apply:
Upon
arrival at UWM, or anytime thereafter while enrolled in an ESL class, the
student may demonstrate improved English proficiency by presenting a new TOEFL
or IELTS score. If the student receives a TOEFL score of 550 (213 for
computer-based exam) or above, or the IELTS score of 6.5 or above, the English
deficiency will be removed by the Graduate School.
If the
TOEFL score is below 550 (213 for computer-based exam) or the IELTS score is
below 6.5, the student must complete ESL instruction at UWM and take a reduced
course load. An academic course load restriction (maximum of 6 academic
credits) and continued ESL instruction will be required each semester until
the English deficiency is removed.
The
English Deficiency must be removed within 3 semesters of enrollment at UWM.
Students who do have their English deficiency removed will not be permitted to
register for future terms.
- Department or School Requirements. Individual departments or schools may
have additional requirements, such as the Graduate Record Examination (GRE),
Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT),
letters of recommendation, or others. Check with the department to which you
are applying for additional requirements.
- Financial Certification. Applicants who expect
to hold an F-1 or J-1 visa must provide proof of adequate funds to live and
study full-time at UWM.

at a U.S. embassy or consulate abroad or to transfer from another U.S.
institution, or to apply for a change of status to F-1 or J-1.

it receives your financial verification. However, late submission of
this item will delay issuance of your I-20 or DS-2019 if you are admitted.
