Hessen Exchange Eligibility

     

 

Due to the broad scope of the Hessen-Wisconsin exchange there is not a standard eligibility requirement for participation. For the various International Summer Universities there are German language courses at all levels and then some course work in English and some in German. Naturally, for a semester or year of immersion in German higher education students would need a higher level of German language skills. Some of the universities offer a program of language training along with course work on various topics taught in German but specially designed for and taught to visiting students. Also in such "hybrid" offerings you may find some of the universities have courses taught in English even for the German students. These occur in the English or American Studies Departments, Business, etc.

 

Each UW System university will screen and select their students before sending the applications to Milwaukee. Here is a general guideline for eligibility requirements:

Total Immersion: at least five to six semesters of college-level German (or the equivalent through placement testing), junior or senior standing, good academic standing (3.0 GPA), good foundation of course work in the major, statement of purpose written in German, two letters of recommendation (at least one from your home campus German Department), and transcripts.

 

German as a Foreign Language/"Hybrid" Courses for Visiting Students: at least four semesters of college-level German, sophomore, junior or senior status, good academic standing (2.75 GPA), statement of purpose written in German or English, two letters of recommendation, transcripts.

 

International Summer Universities (ISU): one year of university attendance, good academic standing (2.5 GPA), statement of purpose, one letter of recommendation, transcripts, some prior German language helpful.
