Cost, Financial Aid & Scholarship
Cost Estimates
On the Hessen exchange you register at your home campus and pay tuition as you normally do for the amount of credits desired (normally 6 credits in summer and 12 credits for a semester). Other pre-departure costs include airfare, passport, a study abroad program fee, UW System Health Insurance, a housing deposit, etc. Click here to download a sample cost sheet for a semester program or a summer program.
Financial Aid and Scholarships
Generally, you may use most financial aid or scholarships you normally receive for an overseas academic program. This will vary from campus to campus and students should double check the requirements with the study abroad office or a financial aid advisor at their home school. Although there may be other sources for funding your studies in Germany, here are two options:
Wisconsin Grants for Study Abroad:
Every campus in the University of Wisconsin System has been allotted money by the state legislature specifically to fund Wisconsin resident undergraduates participating in UW System study abroad programs. Each campus sets their own criteria for applying. Check with your home campus study abroad office about procedures to follow.
German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD):
This German organization offers scholarships to help US students study in Germany. There is one for short-term study and one for semester/year-long study. Amount and eligibility requirements vary. Application deadline is mid-March each year so you will have to plan your study abroad well in advance. Please check their website for further details.
