International Welcome Reception
This Wednesday, September 15, from 3 - 5 pm in Greene Hall, UWM's
Center for International Education will be hosting an International Welcome
Reception.
All members of the UWM and Milwaukee communities with international interests are invited to attend.
UWM's new Chancellor, Carlos E. Santiago, will
open this exciting event.
Keynote speaker: Senator Gary Hart served as co-chair of the U.S. Commission on National Security for the 21st Century. The Commission performed the most comprehensive review of national security since 1947, predicted the terrorist attacks on America, and proposed a sweeping overhaul of U.S. national security structures and policies for the post-Cold War new century and the age of terrorism. Moderated by: John Berman, National Correspondent, ABC News. Launched in 2003 by the UN Foundation, The People Speak was established to make international affairs understandable and accessible to all Americans and help them form opinions on issues critical to the future of the U.S.
Discussion Group (join us and make your voice heard as we discuss the issue of American Power and Global Security) Discussion groups are FREE -- September 29, 2004, Noon – 1 PM:
The Institute of World Affairs is proud to cooperate with Mercy Corps for this rare look at the current situation in Iraq and Afghanistan. Mercy Corps is an international relief organization which has been working in Afghanistan since 1986 and began working in Iraq after the start of the 2003 conflict. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to hear about the reality from the ground.
Discussion Group – Iraq and Afghanistan -- October 13, 2004, Noon – 1 PM:
This critical debate will focus on Bush and Kerry’s foreign policy platforms. Donnelly and Korb, experts with divergent views on these issues, will debate which candidate’s platform will make America more or less secure. Join this important pre-election discussion!
Discussion Group – Foreign Policies of the Presidential Candidates -- October 27, 2004, Noon- 1 PM:
As with so many political issues in the U.S., foreign policy has become so polarized that it is difficult to have a constructive dialogue. This panel will explore questions such as: What values do we want our foreign policy to serve? What do we, as Americans, want from our foreign policy? Even if finding common ground proves elusive, IWA hopes to model a respectful conversation where people can disagree without being disagreeable and learn from each other.
Discussion Group – The Foreign Policy Center -- November 10, 2004, Noon – 1 PM:

A lecture series will also be offered.
The archeological drawings of Christiane Clados,
Ph.D. (Post-Doctoral Fellow, UW-Madison and Research Associate, Free University
of Berlin) will be on display.
Dr. Clados
paints her "reconstructions" based on archaeological finds in Mesoamerica and
the former Inca lands of South America. Like other archeologists, she uses sites
reports, stratigraphic profiles and iconography, yet the uniqueness of her work
resides in how she uses scientific method to create magnificent artistic
reconstructions of pre-columbian life. Cosponsored by Latino Arts, CLACS,
UW-Madison Latin American, Caribbean and Iberian Studies, with additional
support from the Wisconsin Humanities Council.

Global Youth Connect invites young leaders (ages 18-25) interested in expanding their knowledge and understanding of human rights and social justice to join us for a 2-week study tour to Guatemala.
"This experiential education program will take participants to Guatemala City, Antigua, and Quetzaltenango to explore the range of human rights issues that are currently impacting Guatemala's development. We will explore the roots of the violent conflict which held Guatemala in its grasp for almost four decades and learn how this legacy of violence has impacted the country and its people. Participants will meet with leading human rights defenders, government representatives, youth and others from local communities to learn about the political and social challenges faced by Guatemalans. We will also connect with young Guatemalans in Quetzaltenango in an interactive workshop designed to build cross-cultural understanding. Through hands-on service activities, participants will also have a chance to work side-by-side with Guatemalans in finding positive solutions to social and economic concerns. We will consider the ways in which we can help raise awareness on the issues and provide collaborative support to Guatemalans who are already working to create change."

Call for Papers
Since 2000, ISTC has been working to establish an annual
space for open conversations between anyone (scholars, young and old, graduates,
public intellectuals and professionals) wanting to explore ideas, old and new,
introduce new projects and research ideas, and report on completed projects. The
Centres of the Consortium cover social and political theory, historical
sociology, cultural studies, inter-civilizational studies and the Consortium
exists only to promote debate and critical reflection. We invite prospective
participants to send in paper ideas and proposals for panels. As this is the
first ISTC conference to take place outside the Trans-Atlantic axis, we are keen
to receive proposals on Asian perspectives and Asian concerns from people
working in Asian contexts.
We have already received expressions of interest in panels on:
1. Pathways to and through Modernity: alternative or multiple modernities? 2. Transnational diseases, transborder transactions 3. China and India in 21st century 4. Insiders and Outsiders: Ethnos and demos in Asia and beyond 5. Cultures of consumption 6. Religious revitalization and Inter-civilizational Dialogues 7. War, Terror, Territoriality 8. Urban sexualities, media, and social movements

Detailed information and proposal guidelines are available on the CIES website (http://www.cies.org) under the non-U.S. scholar programs.
The program application booklet mentions that proposals should be received at CIES on or before September 15, 2004. Council on Foreign Relations: Campaign
2004
http://www.cfr.org/campaign2004/
The Council on Foreign Relations
has been providing intelligent analysis of foreign policy choices faced by the
United States for a host of groups (such as journalists and students) for close
to 75 years. One of the organization's more ambitious online efforts of late is
this nice site which brings together the foreign policy statements issued over
the past few months by the two major candidates in the 2004 U.S. presidential
election. The site includes recent commentaries by Senator John Kerry on the
9/11 Commission Report and President George W. Bush's remarks on the signing of
the Project BioShield legislation. Additionally, the site contains foreign
policy statements from the vice presidential candidates and former Democratic
Party candidates, including Howard Dean and Dick Gephardt. The site also
features some nice bonus commentaries from distinguished observers of
international affairs from Saudi Arabia, Italy, Sweden, and a number of other
countries.
USA
For UNHCR
http://www.unrefugees.org/
The situation for refugees around
the world is frequently a desperate one, and one that continues to be a concern
of a number of international organizations, such as the World Bank and others.
One such organization is USA for UNHCR, which is dedicated to raising the
consciousness of Americans about “the work and accomplishments of the United
Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)”. For those who may not be
immediately familiar with their work, the UNHCR is responsible for protecting
over 20 million people worldwide, including refugees, internally displaced
people, and former refugees who are hoping to return their homes. On the
organization's site, visitors can learn about volunteer opportunities, World
Refugee Day, and read news updates about both its humanitarian work and the
situation of various refugee populations.

Organization for Security and Co-operation in
Europe
http://www.osce.org/
With its international headquarters in
Vienna, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OCSE) is the
largest regional security organization in the world. Currently, the OCSE has 55
participating members from Central Asia, Europe, and North America. The OSCE's
approach to security issues is quite comprehensive, as the organization is
interested in addressing a number of issues including election monitoring,
environmental security, and preventive diplomacy. Interested parties will find
this site a real resource, as it features access to the organization's magazine
(published in Russian and English), feature stories that profile its work in the
field, and a number of fact sheets that talk about the OSCE's various activities
and general mission. A real bonus is the online video (in the RealOnePlayer
format) that talks about the evolution of the OSCE over the past 25 years. The
site is rounded by a listing of current employment opportunities within the
organization.
Imperial War Museum Collections On-line
Database
http://www.iwmcollections.org.uk/
The nature of war and its aftermath
has served as the inspiration for numerous creative works, including those in
the visual arts, poetry, film, and photography. Of course, wars themselves have
been well-documented in general, particularly with the explosion of various
technological innovations that allow individuals the opportunity to capture
various moments both on the battlefield and the home front. The Imperial War
Museum Collections Online Database allows the intrepid web-browser access to
over 150,000 records relating to items in their holdings. Out of these 150,000
online records, approximately 3,000 of these items are fully available on this
site, and their number includes photographs, works of art, "soundbites", and
other visual artifacts. As searching the entire collection may be daunting, the
staff at the Museum has created a number of thematic categories as a way of
introducing some of their more prominent materials. Some of these categories
include "War in the Air", "Truth & Propaganda", and "Burial &
Remembrance". Overall, this is both an engaging and well-thought-out
site.
