The International Association for Media and History:  Call for Papers
IAMHIST XXII:  "Media and Imperialism -- Press, Photography, Film, Radio and Television in the Era of Modern Imperialism"
Amsterdam, July 18-21, 2007
Organised by the University of Amsterdam, dept. Media Studies in close cooperation with the International Association for Media and History and Utrecht University.

Aims - We are entering a whole new era where the circulation of images is concerned, due to the large-scale digitisation of archives and collections, which has revolutionised existing practices of preservation, retrieval and distribution. We signal therefore an urgent need to rethink the relationship between media and modern imperialism, particularly in light of the complex process of globalisation. These developments invoke critical discussions between various disciplines, such as media studies, ethnology and history.

Focus - The conference will focus on the politics of representation and media practices, from the emergence of mass media and modern imperialism in the mid-nineteenth century, to the successive episodes of decolonisation, as well as on more current issues surrounding heritage and ownership of media collections.

The conference welcomes papers from disciplines such as history, anthropology, media studies, history of art, visual culture studies, social and political science, literary and cultural studies. The organisers welcome participation from all over the world.

Articles Sought by The Journal of International Communication
The JIC seeks article submissions for two upcoming editions.

(1)
Worlds Apart: Bridging the Global-Local Gap
New communication technology can be a bridge between communities separated by geography. It can be a bridge between different socio-economic groups. Intergovernmental, corporate and non-government institutions that operate internationally have access to both intercultural expertise and technology in communicating with each other and their publics. Are they better at communicating with themselves than with their varied publics?  To what extent do international governance structures see a need for direct contact with their publics at grassroots level in relation to democratising governance cultures through facilitating participation?

There are great cultural chasms between global, regional and national level governance structures and ordinary people in 'localities' throughout the world.  Where telecommunication bridges exist, and these are not universally available, cultural chasms often continue to discourage their effective use. How do plain folk in local communities think of global, regional and national institutions and the messages and policies that flow from them? What are the practices, strategies, structures and technologies that plain folk use to project their views at national, regional and global levels - and how effective are these?

JIC 13.2 will accept for review articles that address the issues outlined above. These issues are raised as triggers for the generation of ideas.  They are not meant to be exhaustive or exclusionary.  If a scholar is working on an area, related to the above issues, that is of interest to the multidisciplinary field of International Communication, s/he is welcome to send an abstract to Professor Chitty.

(2) Intercultural Communication
Editors: Naren Chitty & Lily A. Arasaratnam

Research in intercultural communication is more relevant to today's mobile and multicultural society than it has ever been before.
Intercultural communication is being studied from multiple research paradigms, especially in the field of communication. The more we study the subject the more we discover the complexity of the cognitive, emotional, and socio-cultural processes involved in the process of communication between individuals from different cultures.

Papers addressing the following topics and other related topics are invited for the special Intercultural Communication edition of the Journal of International Communication:
JIC  will accept for review articles that address the issues outlined above. These issues are raised as triggers for the generation of ideas.

For either JIC issue:  abstracts should be double-spaced and no longer than 500 words. They should be submitted to the Editor (address given below) by December 31, 2006.

Articles that are submitted for review should follow the APA style guide and must be double-spaced and no longer than 7500 words.  See http://www.mucic.mq.edu.au/jicfor style and submission guide. They must be submitted directly to JIC at the address below before the end of February 2007.

International Topics
Call for Graduate Student Submissions

Graduate students in Old Dominion University's Graduate Program in International Studies have published the first issue of International Topics, and are currently in the closing stages of the second issue.  International Topics solicits articles from graduate student internationally and is peer-reviewed by Ph.D.s across the nation.  Its features, including book reviews, NGOs of interests, and job profiles, are uniquely catered toward graduate students in the field of international relations and international studies.  We're off to an exciting start but need your help to make this endeavor even better. We're asking for submissions from IS/IR grad students like ourselves who are interested in getting original work published. Submissions should be sent to arulska@odu.edu.

International Topics journal publishes articles written by graduate students nationwide in several fields including, but not limited to, international studies, political science, international relations, philosophy, peace studies, and regional studies.  Several features are provided in the journal, in addition to the original research, which allow for the specially tailored journal to address the needs of graduate students.  These features include reviews of books of special interest to students in the IR/IS field, career profiles, and chosen NGOs.

Our focus on graduate students lends a unique character to the format of our journal.  As such, International Topics focuses not only on the academics, but also profiles issues of unique concern to the graduate community, such as career development, continuing research and further educational opportunities.  The journal, thus, provides a valuable resource for students in their continuing education regardless of their post-graduate goals.

Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis. The journal would like submissions sent to the Editor-in-Chief, Anna Rulska at arulska@odu.edu.  From this point the editorial staff facilitates proof reading and distribution to a blind peer review process. Each submission is reviewed by three members of the Academic Review Board, composed of Ph.D.s across the nation.  The Academic Review Board recommends acceptance, acceptance with suggested modification, or rejection.  Submissions accepted with modifications are returned to author for resubmission. Upon resubmission, the editorial staff will review modifications.

Faculty Development Seminar at the University of Hyderabad, India
July 29-August 11, 2007

Co-sponsored by South Dakota State University and the University of Hyderabad
http://international.sdstate.edu/FacDev/India.htm

Location
The University of Hyderabad is located just outside Hyderabad, a city of 5 million, India’s fifth largest.  Hyderabad is the capital of the modern state of Andhra Pradesh, and was, until 1948, the capital of the old princely state of Hyderabad, India’s largest just prior to Independence.

The University
Situated on 2,300 acres of land, with many trees and rolling hills, the University of Hyderabad is one of India’s most attractive and best-equipped campuses.  Comprising eight schools, The University of Hyderabad has approximately 2,000 students, all at the graduate level (Master’s and PhD).  One of India’s most prestigious universities, The University of Hyderabad is also one of India’s youngest, founded in 1974.  All instruction is in English.  Most students at The University of Hyderabad are from India, but the university has a growing international student population.  The Study India Program (SIP), which coordinates short-term programs for international students at the UofH, will be primarily responsible for organizing the Faculty Seminar on India.

Seminar Program
Established in 2000, the Faculty Seminar on India focuses on broad topics in Indian history, culture, economy, politics, higher education, religions, and language. It is designed to give participants a serious academic grounding in India’s past and present, as well as its possibilities for the future.  What makes this seminar unique is that the participants themselves help determine some of the lecture topics, based on their own individual interests and backgrounds.  As a result, part of each year’s seminar varies, based on the mix of participants.

Seminar members will attend morning lectures given by specialists from both the University of Hyderabad and other nearby universities and educational institutions.  Afternoons are reserved for interactions between US faculty and their Indian counterparts, as well as for site visits to important places within Hyderabad.  Two or three cultural programs will be held during some evenings.  One weekend trip within Andhra Pradesh will also be scheduled as part of the seminar.  In addition, optional yoga classes are available each morning.

Seminar Program Leadership
Leading the group from the US is Dr. Karl J. Schmidt, Director of International Affairs and associate professor of history at SDSU.  A specialist in the history of India/South Asia, he has conducted research, lived and traveled in India eight times since his first visit in 1992.  He is the author of An Atlas and Survey of South Asian History.  His current research is on the history of fortifications in India.

Program leadership at the University of Hyderabad includes Prof. Prakash C. Sarangi, PhD (Rochester), Director, SIP and Professor of Political Science; Dr. Aparna Rayaprol, PhD (Pittsburgh), Coordinator, SIP and Reader in Sociology; Prof. Y. A. Sudhakar Reddy, PhD (IIT), Coordinator, Faculty Seminar and Professor of Folk Culture Studies.

Accommodations & Meals
The Seminar includes lodging and all meals on campus at the university’s visiting scholar’s residence.  Meals are primarily Indian and vegetarian.  Bottled hygienic water will be provided at all times.  The city of Hyderabad also has many fine restaurants for those seeking some variety, including a number of excellent restaurants within international-class five-star hotels.

Eligibility & Application
Any university or college employee holding faculty rank in any discipline is eligible to apply.  Brochures and application forms are available through the SDSU Office of International Affairs, at the address below.  Faculty members participating in this program must be willing to show how they would incorporate material about India into the courses they regularly teach, or demonstrate how the experience would benefit and have an impact on their everyday work in helping to internationalize their own campuses.

Cost
The cost of the Faculty Development Seminar on India is $1,875.  The seminar fee covers all lectures, meals, and lodging on campus for the two-week seminar, as well as local site visits as part of the seminar.  While on campus, participants also have free access to yoga classes, and all university facilities, such as the library, computer center, sports and primary health center.  The seminar fee does not include international airfare, incidentals, tips, additional touring, cost of passport or visa fees, or personal expenses.  Optional touring can be arranged at additional cost through a highly reputable travel agent in New Delhi (please contact Dr. Schmidt for details).

African Union
    http://www.africa-union.org/
As visitors enter this site, they will be presented with a collage of African nations coming together to form the entire continent, accompanied by the words “Africa must unite.” It is a visually stimulating image, and one that sets the tone quite nicely for the content within. The site is the homepage of the African Union (AU), which was created in 1999 as part of a declaration from the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). While their mission is complex to say the least, their primary goal is to promote the “…accelerated socio-economic integration of the continent, which will lead to greater unity and solidarity between African countries and peoples.” The site presents a cornucopia of material on their work, contained within sections titled “Member States”, “Conferences & Events”, and “Documents”. One of the best places to start is the “News and Events” area, which contains a sampling of information on their recent work on gender equity, sustainable development, higher education systems, and so on. As might be expected, visitors can also browse through many of these materials in Arabic, French, and Portuguese.

Immigration to the United States, 1789-1930
    http://ocp.hul.harvard.edu/immigration/
While it never really left us, immigration has once again emerged as a central issue for many Americans. For a first-hand look at the history of immigration in the United States from the years 1789 to 1930, this website is quite a pip. Created as part of the Open Collections Program at Harvard University, this online archive includes approximately 1,800 books, 6,000 photographs, and 200 maps. Just to give visitors some sense of what is included here, they will be able to browse through the records of the Immigration Restriction League and take a gander at images Harvard’s Social Museum, which was established in 1903 to illustrate “problems of the social order.” Of course, given this bounty of primary documents, visitors will also want to make use of the keyword search feature and a rather nice timeline.

Mexico as Muse
    http://www.sfmoma.org/modotti-weston/index.html
Tina Modotti and Edward Weston, photographers active in the first half of the 20th century, lived and worked together in Mexico for several years, and both believed that the country - and each other - provided an important source of inspiration for their art. This exhibition explores the intersections of Modotti and Weston's personal and artistic lives. Modotti learned photography from Weston, and her pictures, depicting workers on construction sites, loading bananas for shipment, or reading a Communist newspaper, are more politically motivated than Weston's. Modotti, however, was the first of the two to photograph still life up close, creating images of flowers. Weston took up still life as well, creating some of his most famous pictures of vegetables and shells. The online exhibition includes film of Modotti and Weston, an interview with art historian Patricia Albers, photographs by and of both artists, as well as digital versions of letters, albums and scrapbooks.
