Faculty Forums

The Faculty Forum was an initiative undertaken by CIE and its predecessor, the Center for International Studies (CIS).  The Forum brought together faculty from across the campus to meet, to take stock of the curriculum, and to determine directions for further development of international education options at UWM. In these Forum meetings, the new Bachelor's Degree in Global Studies was conceptualized. CIE continued to hold regular, open meetings of interested UWM faculty throughout the Global Studies planning process.

Information about the original Faculty Forum meetings is provided below:

January 19, 2001

On January 19, 2001, the new Center for International Education hosted a half-day workshop to continue the dialogue begun at the two earlier Faculty Forum meetings. With the Visual Art Department's Lane Hall facilitating discussion, it sought to further the development of international education options at UWM.

January 20, 2000

On January 20, 2000, the Center for International Studies (CIS) hosted a half-day workshop to continue discussions begun at the December 15-16 International Studies Faculty Forum. Thirty-six faculty from nine divisions of the university attended. It allowed participants to continue discussing the idea of organizing faculty into cross-disciplinary "clusters" that would share information and collaborate on research, curriculum development, community outreach, and grant-writing activities.

December 15-16, 1999

On December 15 & 16, 1999, the Center for International Studies (CIS) hosted the first of a series of workshops for faculty from across the campus to meet, take stock of the curriculum, and determine directions for further development of international education options at UWM. This initial International Studies Faculty Forum involved over 50 faculty from 22 departments and six professional schools, demonstrating the widespread interest in and relevance of international education to UWM faculty and students.

During the first day of the Faculty Forum, time was set aside for breakout groups to discuss what international studies means in the context of individual participants' disciplinary fields. Download a copy of the International Studies Across Disciplines document (.pdf format) for more information about the outcomes of this very interesting discussion.
