Get Involved

The Center for International Education (CIE) relies heavily on the active participation of faculty.  If you would like more information about how you can become involved in any of the below activities or have suggestions for additional programs, please contact Tracy Buss at tbuss@uwm.edu or (414) 229-5381.

Global Studies Affiliated Faculty and Academic Teaching Staff

All UWM faculty and academic teaching staff are encouraged to identify as Global Studies Affiliates, if at least one of the following criteria are met:

- Faculty and Teaching Academic Staff who have taught or have committed to teach Global Studies courses;
- Those who have received Global Studies grant money;

- Those who have participated in Global Studies planning meetings or have contributed input regarding Global Studies planning via email;
- Those who have requested to be identified as Global Studies Affiliates; and
- Those who have expressed interest in Global Studies and/or requested to be added to the Global Studies email list.

The benefits of being a Global Studies Affiliate include:

- Notification of CIE funding opportunities to support course-development, travel, and library acquisitions related to Global Studies;
- Preference in CIE funding applications related to Global Studies;
opportunities to influence the development of the new Global Studies degree program and related activities through planning meetings and other communications;
- Opportunities to influence activities at the Center for International Education and the overall NRC grant through providing input;
- Assistance in developing and writing grant proposals;
- Announcements of CIE conferences, the Global Studies colloquia, and other events; and
- Participation in an interdisciplinary, cross-campus community of scholars with common interests in global issues.

If you would like to become a Global Studies Affiliate (or be removed from the list), please contact Tracy Buss at tbuss@uwm.edu or (414) 229-5381.

Global Studies Colloquia

CIE hosts regular talks by UWM faculty and visiting scholars on issues pertaining to globalization.  If you have research that you would like to share at a Global Studies Colloquium, please contact Tracy Buss at tbuss@uwm.edu or (414) 229-5381.

Global Studies Planning

CIE organized regular, open meetings to help develop and plan the Global Studies degree program curriculum. To learn more about the history of CIE's efforts to develop the Global Studies degree program, please reference the notes below:

Now that the Global Studies program tracks have received final approval, CIE's Global Studies Advisory Committee continues to meet at least once each semester to review the program as necessary and address any current issues.

Global Studies and International Studies Teaching

CIE welcomes faculty interested in teaching internationally-focused courses. CIE seeks faculty to teach courses for both the inter-departmental Global Studies and International Studies programs, but will also cross-list departmental courses and advertise appropriate courses to students.

Overseas Programs

CIE works closely with faculty in developing and implementing overseas study, research, and exchange agreements.

Scholarly Conferences

CIE sponsors scholarly conferences which highlight UWM faculty members' research and foster connections with international scholars and practitioners.

Publications

Patrice Petro edits the New Directions in International Studies book series with Rutgers University Press, through which many CIE conferences have experienced an afterlife. CIE also publishes occasional papers on international topics and invites submissions from UWM faculty or visiting scholars.

Funding Support

CIE sponsors a number of grant opportunities for faculty to support the development of international education at UWM.  Visit our Funding Support web page for more information.
