Global Studies Courses

Faculty Members from across UWM's schools have helped design the Bachelor's in Global Studies courses. There are two types of courses:

1. All Global Studies students are required to complete the following:

• Global Studies Core Courses 9 cr
• World Regions 3cr
• Think Tank Learning Community 4cr
• Study Abroad
• International Internship

2. Required and elective courses specific to each of the five tracks:

• Global Management
• Global Cities
• Global Classrooms
• Global Communications
• Global Security

I. Global Studies Core Courses are taken in sequence and introduce and explore the issues below.

Global Studies I: People & Politics 3 cr

• global political, economic, and cultural issues
• the conceptualization, definitions, and histories, as well as demographic, linguistic, and cultural dimensions of "people and politics"

Global Studies II: Economics and the Environment 3 cr

• the link between international trade and environmental change
• an intertwined world economy and global monetary systems
• the role of world organizations
• the political impact of global environmental change

Global Studies III: Globalization & Information Technology 3 cr

• globalization and information technology, a conceptual overview
• global transfer of technology: history and current trends
• contemporary issues in information technology
• media convergences and divisions

II. World Regions courses provide an introduction to area studies. To fulfill this requirement, students chose from one of the following 3 credit courses:

• Geography 110 - The World: Peoples and Regions 
• History 132 - World History Since 1500                    
• Political Science 106 - Politics of the World's Nations

III. Think Tank Learning Community cours es provide a forum to discuss current global issues and apply new knowledge in analyzing case studies. This is a one credit course with variable content. Students are required to enroll in four 1 credit Think Tank courses.
