Global Cities Track

The Bachelor of Arts in Global Studies through the Global Cities track is designed to help students understand the global dimensions and local variations of urbanism and architecture. Students will explore such issues as the history and economy of global cities, the causes and implications of urban growth and international architectural design.

Students in this track must choose to specialize in either of two areas: architecture or urbanism.  To pursue the architecture option, potential students must meet the admission requirements of the School of Architecture and Urban Planning (SARUP).

This track affords a range of options that allow students to prepare for careers in fields such as architecture, urban planning, or Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Global Cities track core courses focus on:

  • the global dimensions and local variations of urban issues
  • the growth of cities in a historical context, and causes and consequences of urban growth
  • what "makes" a city - e.g. its demographics, design, economy, language, cultural life, government, and public policies
  • environmental, social and economic problems of cities
  • challenges to urban design, planning, governance and sustainability
  • the students' own lives as part of a larger social community

This degree is jointly awarded by the UWM College of Letters and Science and the School of Architecture and Urban Planning (SARUP).
