Only 15-20% of available jobs are advertised. To improve your job search success rate, utilize direct application and informational interviewing/networking. When applying to advertised positions demonstrate in your resume/cover letter as many qualities as possible that are in the advertisement.

The primary web based resource that connects UWM students and alumni with local and national employers. Whether you are a current student looking for a part-time job, internship, co-op or full-time position or an alumnus looking for a new opportunity, PantherJobs has something for you! To access PantherJobs, first review the two different user options and the instructions for logging on or registering.
Online listing of full-time professional, internship, and part-time positions specifically targeted to UWM students and alumni. Many positions do not require a degree in business.
Most city and community newspapers are online. You can locate some newspapers through these links and through online search engines.
Many employers post full-time, part-time, and internship positions on their website. Some will also allow you to apply on their site. Call organizations or interest to inquire if they have a website on which they list open positions. If not, ask if they post openings in other formats, such as job hotlines. You can also use online search engines to locate organization websites. However, make sure the website you locate is actually for the specific organization at the geographic location you are interested in.
Most federal, state, city, and county positions are online. Federal, Wisconsin, and Milwaukee government sites are listed below. If you are interested in other government agencies, call to inquire if they have a website on which they list open positions. If not, ask if they post openings in other formats such as telephone hotlines. You can also use online search engines to locate government sites.

Many larger volunteer organizations list positions online. Below are links to some organizations in the Milwaukee area. If you are interested in other agencies and/or locations call to inquire if they have a website on which they list open positions. If not, ask how to get involved with volunteer opportunities in their organization.
Representatives often attend career fairs to fill specific advertised jobs and internships among other reasons. Some job fairs have open positions posted on boards and in various media.
Contact academic departments on campus related to your career area to inquire if they post positions. Check their bulletin boards and with their staff members.
Many professional organizations will post positions on their websites or in journals/newsletters that you can subscribe to. Most career research resources will include a listing of related professional organizations and their websites and contact information.
Often positions are posted or referred to on professionally oriented email discussion groups. Refer to the CDC Guide to Informational Interviewing on the Internet for information on identifying email discussion groups and the rules of netiquette.
Employment agencies may specialize in types of positions they place jobseekers in or may have a wider variety of placement opportunities. We suggest using only agencies whose fees are paid by the employer and that can demonstrate previous placements at organizations you are interested in. Sometimes it is beneficial to work with more than one agency at a time.
Student and alumni resumes are referred to employers and on-campus interviews are scheduled for all majors through PantherJobs. Check the PantherJobs site for more information on how to register for this service. |
