UWM AND THE MILWAUKEE COMMUNITY

The University of Wisconsin--Milwaukee is a major research-oriented university with over 24,000 students. The 90-acre campus is situated in an attractive residential neighborhood adjacent to Lake Michigan. The graduate degree programs offered by UWM are fully accredited through the doctoral level by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

The Milwaukee metropolitan area has a population of 1.4 million people and provides a diversity of cultural and recreational opportunities while maintaining a moderate cost of living. An outstanding system of 137 parks is complemented by 2 botanical gardens the Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory (which boasts three large geodesic domes for horticultural displays) and Boerner Botanical Gardens, 5 nature-interpretive centers, the nationally recognized Milwaukee County Zoo, and the Milwaukee Public Museum. The city has professional football, baseball, basketball, soccer, and hockey teams, as well as an Olympic ice rink. Milwaukee is host to symphony, theater, ballet, and opera companies, as well as excellent art museums. Over 60 music, ethnic, and art festivals are held throughout the year.
