Microbiology Major

This information applies to students entering UWM in the Spring of 2004 and thereafter.
UWM students who have matriculated before Spring of 2004 have the option of following the
new or previous curriculum.

 

Microbiology Major

The Department of Biological Sciences offers two majors: the more general Biological Sciences Major and the Microbiology Major. These require, respectively, a minimum of 34 and 35 credits in biology, of which 15 credits at the advanced (300 and above) level must be taken in residence at UWM. No more than 8 credits in 100-level courses in biological sciences may be applied toward the major, and students may not combine 150, 202, and 203 for more than 9 credits toward the major. Students must maintain an average GPA of 2.5 in biological sciences courses taken for the major.

Microbiology

Microbes were the first living organisms on earth, and they remain the most abundant and the most diverse of all living creatures. Microbes play important roles in biogeochemical cycles, pathogenesis, and bioremediation. Studies of microorganisms resulted in the birth of the exciting field of Molecular Biology and continue to be the driving force behind developments in this field.

Microbiology Major at UWM

The Microbiology major is designed to provide a course of study required for application for the American Society of Microbiology National Registry Examination. Students selecting this option must complete the required courses and other elective microbiology courses to earn a total of 20 credits in microbiology.
