Undergraduate Advising Information
Declaration of Major in Biological Sciences

This information applies to students entering UWM in the Spring of 2004 and thereafter.
UWM students who have matriculated before Spring of 2004 have the option of following the
new or previous curriculum.

Students must complete Foundations of Biological Sciences I & II, or the equivalent, Chemistry 102, 104 and Math 105 (or the equivalent) before declaring the major. Failure to complete the declaration of major process, as recommended, may result in a delay of graduation. The Declaration of Major Packet and Form are available in the Dept. of Biological Sciences office (Lapham 181). The student should select a Departmental Advisor, based on your area of interest in Biological Sciences.

TO SET UP AN ADVISING APPOINTMENT:
A.Send an appointment request form to your prospective advisor using the email link on the Biological Sciences Advisors page, telling the days and times you are available to meet, so you can get specific information on the major and advice on planning your curriculum.
B.Print out an up-to-date copy of your transcripts to take to this meeting.
C.You will also need a "Declaration of Major" form (available in the Dept. of Biological Sciences office, Lapham 181).
You must continue meet with your Biological Sciences advisor each semester. In addition, students must regularly consult with their advisor in the College of Letters and Sciences for guidance on completing degree requirements outside the major.

    Major Credits
34 Credit Minimum in departmental courses to include:
1.No more than 8 credits in 100 level courses.
2.150 and 152 (or equivalent) (Foundations in Biological Sciences I and II)
    3.325 (Genetics)
    4.310 &/or 315 + 316
5.26 credits in 300 or above level courses
6.18 credits in courses with laboratories*
7.Capstone Requirement: one of BIO SCI-611, 670 or ENV STD-490 (a senior seminar); BIO SCI-699 (independent study); or Honors 686, 687, or 689 (Honors research, project, or thesis).

    Additional Course Requirements
    1.Chemistry through 341-342 or 343-344-345
    2.Physics 120 and 122, or equivalent and either 121 or 123
3.Math 105 (Intermediate Algebra) for B.A. degree Math 211 or Math 225 and 226 or 231 (Calculus) for B.S. degree.

Students planning to attend graduate school or professional programs are strongly advised to take Chem 343-344-345, both physics labs, and a year of calculus.

A total of 120 degree credits are required for a Bachelor of Science degree, including at least 36 credits in upper-division courses (numbered 300 or above) offered by the College of Letters and Science. For the Bachelor of Science degree, at least 30 of these 36 credits must be from Natural Sciences curricular areas. There is no limit to the number of credits which may be taken in one department.

Students must complete BIO SCI 150 & 152 before declaring a major in biological sciences. When you declare your major you will get Department of Biological Sciences advisor who will guide you in planning your curriculum to help you prepare for your goals. However, students must also meet each semester with their College of Letters & Science advisor (in Holton Hall) who will monitor their progress towards completion of the L&S college requirements.
