The Department of Biological Sciences offers an undergraduate major and minor in Biological Sciences. The program provides course and laboratory opportunities in environmental sciences, molecular and microbial biology and physiology.
The Biological Science program at UWM provides a strong foundation in all areas of biology and the natural sciences. Curricula can be tailored to fit the unique interests and professional goals of the student. The Department of Biological Sciences provides the basic requirements for entrance into a variety of fast-growing careers related to biology, bio-medical health professions, as well as preparation for graduate school.
The required Biological Foundations I & II (150 & 152) provide a broad introduction to biology and the major. To build on this foundation we offer the following Gateway Courses:
Additional depth in your knowledge of biology will be met through advanced courses you select. Your specific interests in biology can be further developed through advanced elective courses in:

General Ecology (310)
Students are encouraged to complete all Gateway Courses, but at a minimum, must complete 325 plus one laboratory Gateway (310 or 315+316). Understanding biology depends on a strong background in the natural sciences. Accordingly, students are required to take introductory chemistry and organic chemistry lecture and lab courses, a year of physics lecture including a lab, and one semester of college math for a Bachelor of Arts (B.A. degree) or math through calculus for a Bachelor of Sciences (B.S. degree).
Cell Biology (315)
Laboratory in Genetics and Cell Biology ( 316)
Genetics (325).
You will further your professional development in Senior Seminar (670) and have the opportunity to participate in independent study projects under the direction of our research faculty. A Microbiology Major is also available. Students interested in ecology, can choose the interdisciplinary major in Conservation and Environmental Science:
